Hi Everyone,

I'm about to start work at a public school. However, a school in the UAE will want me to work for them in August. If I end the contract early, at four months into it, what will happen?

Thanks,

Joe

You will have to pay back your ticket and your settlement allowance.

Nothing, as long as you don't want to work in Korea.

this is kind of one of those things where you have to think about giving notice and how beneficial it would be to you.

You can totally pull a midnight run and not suffer any consequences, besides possibly being blacklisted from all public schools in korea in the future. Or you can give notice and have them pressure you for 2 months to return all the money you supposedly owe them and they will probably treat you like crap until you leave.

If they do end up treating you badly, make sure to rub into their faces how you will be getting paid waaaaay more for working waaaaay less and how lucky YOU are to have a big 7 passport (native English speaking countries), etc.

Yeah, remain professional at all times! Pull that midnight run! They totally deserve what you're going to do to them, apparently! Even though you haven't started yet and for all you know it could be an excellent school with great kids and kind CTs, absolutely screw them over for a bigger check from the Arabs! No guilt, it's just business, right?

As to the consequences, I can assure you you will not work at any PS in this country again [justifiably]. You may have issues with Immigration but I wouldn't count on it. They will look to get their settlement allowance back, and their airfare, if it's less than 6 months [also justifiably]. Other than that, probably nothing else concrete.

I'm waiting for TUM and Patrick and the rest to pipe up here and remind me how professional teachers in Korea who are not like me behave, how not EVERYONE is a mercenary just looking to cash a check. How MOST people are here because they LIKE teaching and LIKE Korea and I am not AT ALL representative of the typical ESLer here.

I may be a mercenary, but at least I'm an honorable one. If your school doesn't treat you poorly [and how would he know?], they don't deserve this kind of behavior. The students deserve better. It makes us all look bad.

Do the midnight run. Not any time soon they will treat teachers there normally so who cares.

Geesh guys!!! Schools that find a teacher in Korea after they got documents from a teacher out of the country have no remorse switching to the one in Korea to avoid the airfare.

It's unfortunate, but the school can find another teacher. Big deal.

That's generally a hakwon trick and not a P.S one. P.S get their money from the government so they don't care.
But regardless so what? Because SOME schools act unethically...that means we should too? We should take our moral compasses from HAKWON OWNERS? Maybe that's why so many of them are bitter jerks because they've been burnt by unethical teachers once too many times. Screwing over a school before they screw you is both unprofessional and unethical. Not to mention it screws over your co-workers who are left holding the bag and makes them look even more unfavourably on the next FT to join that place.

It cuts both ways here.

On a side note I agree with Mr. Modernist's post above ( at least the first two paragraphs Smile )

On another side note...I'm agreeing with Mr. Modernist?
The end of the world must be nigh...Smile

How is it unprofessional or unethical? Everyone is allowed to leave a job. Everyone is allowed to hire another teacher.

This righteous pious act of superiority has got to go.

If you sign a contract knowing ahead of time that you are not going to keep it then that is both unprofessional and unethical. It is also considered fraud in many places.

It is what it is.

What's the rush to get a job in Korea for what looks like just three months? If you want to do that, be up-front with the schools. Oh, that's right. There aren't any three-month contracts with the public schools, are there? And, of course, a hagweon's not going to fly you to Korea knowing you're going to leave after completing just 25% of the usual contract term. Of course, you could've already informed a hagweon that you're no longer working for them because you've taken the public school gig and then this more attractive offer came your way from the Emirates. If that's the case and your apartment is provided by your hagweon, perhaps you'd be better off doing a tourist visa run to stay in Korea and live in a goshiweon.

C'mon, OP. Tell us what's really going on. That's got to be a more interesting story than what you have upthread now.

Your future employers will look at your job history and say that you are unwilling to finish contracts. If you stay your future employers will say that you are reliable and finish contracts and are good enough not to be fired early.

I said if the school treats him badly, then he should rub it in their faces. And all of you on this high moral plateau, step off. This job is about making money and that is achievable while still having a good working relationship with your co workers and school, in most places. In korea, as we have heard time and again, people that act honestly and give their employers notice of breaking the contract usually get treated very poorly for inane reasons.

The op should do whatever makes him happier.
