Hi all,

How far in advance of your first day of work did you guys move over? I am wondering about jet lag, shopping, etc. ahead of first work day etc. Is the apartment ready for you to move into a week or so before you start work?
Thank you in advance.

It all depends on the school and you. I have stayed with an owner before choosing a place, and then moving essentials in. I have had a place already set up. I have moved into a goshitel while waiting for a school to let me move in, and when I did there wasn't anything. The next day, everything was delivered brand new though and had to be assembled (bed, fridge, TV, tables, chairs, etc...). I have had to wait for the previous teacher to move out, meaning it isn't always just between you and the school but also the previous teacher. I have moved out completely from a previous job, rented 1 month, found a job, and then moved to a cheaper place across the street. Much like the first one, the owner let me use his stuff.

If there is a previous teacher, plan 1 day in advance. Use that time to relax and only walk around the block or so to see what is around. Don't play tourist.

If there wasn't a previous teacher, and you are willing to take anything almost, then there can be a place ready for you to move into when the owner gets it (possibly a week in advance, but no guarantee). In that case, you will have a lot of time.

If you are picky and you don't mind a rough start, get a hotel, try to have them pay for it, and then find a place to move into the first week. Split the costs and do the same thing before the contract period if possible.

Again, it's down to you and the school.
