|
|
I'm nearly into my 8th month of my gepik contract at a school that I really like and I would like to re-sign for another year. However, my fianc and I recently got engaged and are both planning on going back to school in late August/ early September of next year, and we'd like to get married before that. The problem is that both of our contracts started September 1st, so a second year contract would go until the same date in 2013.
My question is, then, is it possible to re-sign with a school for what would be an 11 month contract if they agree to it? I don't want to go home for what is essentially a year to find work before going to school when I like the job I have now. Is it better to tell them before re-signing and hope they agree to a shorter contract or just give them 30 days notice next summer?
Advice? |

Sign a new 12 month contract (as normally done), do NOT request or collect any severance as this will reset the clock and you will have to finish another year before collecting any severance for the second year.
Personally, I would leave before the summer camp starts. However, that's a side issue, if you want summer work (which is usually more work, longer hours, for the same pay) then give notice later (30 days before you want to leave).
Then, you should be entitled to 23/12 or around there of your salary for severance. Make sure pension funds are being paid and remember to apply to have them sent to your bank account in your home country. You can also keep your Korean account and have it sent to your account in your home country.
You won't get airfare to return home. |

I don't know about GEPIK, but my MOE automatically gives severance every year. Isn't that the same with Gepik?
If the severance scheme won't work, don't take any vacation days in the winter, try to make a deal with your principle/ boss, or find a hagwon. |

While I definitely appreciate the responses, I'm primarily interested in at least attempting negotiating an 11 month contract. Is it even possible? Or is the nature of the contract such that there is no way around a year-long contract? I just don't want to bring it up and then have them not re-sign me because of it.... |

It's definitely possible to negotiate an 11 month contract. It just depends on what you're willing to give up. |

It's possible, but what is the point? If you are trying be moral about all this by giving 13 months or more notice, that's up to you. Talk with the school, not us.
If you do, don't be surprised if they look for another teacher. I have 2 months to go at my current school, and I am pretty certain I won't teach much in June because students will study for final exams and then take them. However, the school is doing nothing to get a new teacher or let me go early. Fine, if they want to pay a final month it's up to them.
I already told them in April and I mentioned it again today. Even if you told them about it now, it might not register to them they could save a month's worth of pay. They don't think that far ahead.
Their formula is, can you sign the contract as is without changing anything? |

I see your point. I guess I'm just trying to save myself as much grief (and money) as possible. |

Also, YTMND, can you point out where it says anything about being paid partial severance in the contract? The only thing I see about it states that it's paid on completion of a contract. |

It won't state it in the contract because each contract is going to most likely be addressing only one year. However, by law, if you continue with the same school for a second year you should be entitled to 2 years severance if you finish it. However, my understanding is that if you get paid after the first year, and then you finish only 6 months, you don't get 1.5. You only get partial severance for the second year if you don't collect on it after the first. If you are in your first year, then you must complete that year before you can get any partial severance.
Added to this, some people on here state if you request it, the school must give you it after the first year is completed. Whether or not this is true I am not sure. I never tried that. |

Finishing a 12 month contract over an 11 month contract gets you a great deal more money and the flight guarantee. Work that 12th month and you'll be glad you did. Others may have to change their plans in some way but they should understand your situation. |

This situation is 2 years, not the first year. If you don't collect as mentioned earlier, then you can get 23/12 of your salary. |
