In Ganghwado (Island), the second biggest island in our country, exist 4 mountains in a row from north to south. They are Goryeosan (Mt.), Heolgusan (Mt.), Jingangsan (Mt.), and Manisan (Mt.) all of which are higher than 400m, and Manisan (Mt.) is the highest. In the early records from the Joseon dynasty such as 〈Goryeosa〉〈Sejongsillokjiriji〉〈Taejongsillok〉, it is written as Marisan (Mt.) or Duak which means the head or chief mountain. Even now the name Marisan (Mt.) is used, but the name Manisan (Mt.) has been used for such a long time, that there is no need to confuse people upon this matter.
Manisan (Mt.) is relatively low and near the capital region, making it easy to be visited. Although the altitude above sea level may be quite low, its main ridge is composed of rocks so it provides joy of hiking. Following the ridge narrowly stretched to the southeast, you can observe the vast West Sea. Ascending the 98 steps from 'Ant Waist' where the information signboard of the country pilgrimage is, you will arrive at Chamseongdan, the Historical Site No.136. In this place, the Sacred Torch is lighted for every National Foundation Day and National Games. Chamseongdan was built as an altar by Baedalshin, Wunsa (who governs cloud) in the 51st year of Dangun Wanggeom (BC2283) (the first king of Gojoseon).
According to 〈Samguksagi〉, kings from Goguryeo, Shilla, and Baekje performed rituals to the sky here. It was repaired during the reign of Gongminwang (king) in the Goryeo dynasty and Injo, Sukjong in the Joseon dynasty. This altar was laid with granite, the bottom is round and the upper part is square, and 6m high. On the Chamseongdan, the summit is near at hand to the east, the vast ocean lies beneath you to the south, and you can see Incheon-si (city) far out to the southeast. At the foot to the west of the top stands Jeongsusa (Temple) which was built in the 8th year (A.D.639) of Seondeogyeowang (queen) in the Shilla dynasty and Hamheodongcheon (Valley) where Hamheodaesa (Great Buddhist Priest) is believed to have meditated here.
In the Hamheodongcheon flows water upon the 100-meter-high rock bed where the letter Hamheodongcheon (涵虛洞天) carved by Hamheodaesa himself. Whether or not because Goryeo was invaded too often and tried to defend the country with the aid of Buddha through Buddhist rituals and services, there are numerous venerable temples in Ganghwado.
There are Jeondeungsa (Temple), Jeongsusa (Temple), Jeokseoksa (Temple), Baengnyeonsa (Temple), Cheongnyeonsa (Temple), and many more temples such as Bomunsa (Temple) in Seongmodo (Island), where Nahancheonjinseoksang (stone statue), discovered by a fisherman from the sea, is enshrined. Hwagaesa (Temple) of Yi Saek, Mogeun, and Seonwonsa (Temple) sites also still remain without damage. You can observe various treasures while visiting the mountain. |
