There are a lot of old topics about this, and as you know, Korea loves to change the rules regarding foreigners, so I thought I would start up a fresh one. I plan to travel after Korea, so I wanted to get something that will let me drive in other countries as well. Can I be issued a IDP here, or do I have to send away back home for it. |

If you have a Korean license, you can get an IDP for your Korean License. If you have a foreign license, you have to get the IDP from that country. |

Like the op said, things change often. Unless things have changed in the past couple of years, this is only partially correct. In 2009 for me to to get an international license issued on my Korean license I needed to have lived in Korea for 3 years.
Check this site out:
http://dl.koroad.or.kr/english/02_news/news02.jsp
After reading this, I don't see any mention of the 3 year requirement there, so possibly that has been changed. Maybe best to call them up and see exactly what is required. |

I got my IDL in September last year. I had to trade in my Canadian license to get a Korean one (it was expiring, and the only way to avoid the hefty fines back home), and then I paid 7,000 for the IDL. Took about 1 hour (about 5 passport-sized pics). I went to the DMV near Samsung station, and had English service. Very easy. If your license isn't expiring, you can pick up your original one on your way out (trade back the Korean one). |

I'm a Canadian, but I had an American license. (Quebec license: $200+ for two years, American license $20 for 5 years)
When the American one was about to expire I obtained an International License from the UN (did a search and found it on-line) that was good for 5 years. When that was about to expire I obtained a Korean License. Whenever I travel I get an International one here and use it abroad...have done so in Canada, USA, Mexico and Thailand. |

You night have got jacked on your IDP.
Fraudulent IDP
In the United States, the Department of State has authorized two private entities, the American Automobile Association and the American Automobile Touring Alliance's National Automobile Club (http://www.nationalautoclub.com) as the only entities in the United States to issue IDPs. They advise against purchasing IDPs from unauthorized outlets, as these are sometimes fraudulent.[4]
The United Nations does not issue International Driving Permits (sometimes called "International Driving Documents" or "International Driver Licenses" by fraudulent outlets). The depiction of the UN emblem or the name "United Nations" is not required nor authorized by either the 1949 or 1968 United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic.[5]
There are different rules for each nationality. My South African friend simply did a swap for his Korean license and then could get an IDP here.
It has changed for Americans. We have to take the test and then we can swap for and IDP here. If not then you can go through the AAA or NAC. I use NAC and have had no problems. |
