In my contract it says that I have 20 working days (not including Saturday and Sunday) vacation. I would think that would mean two weeks in the winter and two weeks in the summer.

My vice principal is really cool. We were talking about vacations in the next few months the other day and I asked her when the summer vacation is. She said that the vacations are really short this year because they took out Saturday school. She said that I may only get a week of vacation in the summer.

If I only get a week in the summer, when would my other week be? I was planning on going to Rwanda see my best friend who I haven't seen in two years during my vacation, but if it's only a week, I don't think that I can.

It's not the end of the world, I'm just curious as to when I would take the other time off. I know they're not going to not give it to me since it's in the contract and it's not some hagwon where the contract doesn't mean anything.

Thanks!

Sounds like you should be paid overtime then. Either you are working those days or sitting around.

What do you mean?

I will have to work summer camp, but the vice principal said because the vacation this year is short, I might only get one week of vacation because I'll be working the camp the rest of the time. I don't really think that's fair since it goes against what my contract says - unless they give me those days another time.

I had this situation with my school. They wanted me to do a long camp, but I still had 2 weeks vacation, so I took my vacation during the two weeks before the vacation period. I had a great time in Japan, and got a good deal on the flights as it wasn't peak vacation time!

Make sure they understand that you will be taking your vacation, if they want you to do a camp during the regular vacation period, they will have to give you the time off during the school year.

Selective contract reading. It probably says something about summer camps too. Which trumps in a legal dispute, summer camp and no extra pay or overtime pay without vacation?

If you argue vacation time, then overtime pay would also trump teaching camp without overtime pay. Otherwise, you wouldn't have been entitled to the vacation time to begin with.

Basically, I am saying, go with the overtime pay. If you complain now (it's pretty much May now, just a few more days) you are going to cause a lot of friction between you and your school if you try to get the vacation time now.

I would try to get overtime pay instead. Then try to get vacation time later when it's convenient for both of you.

20 vacation days per year.
Usually, 2 weeks in summer and 2 weeks in winter.
If the school has a short summer vac, and can only give you 1 week, then you'll get 3 weeks in winter.

You will get your days, and there is no overtime.

That being said, if your principal is cool, you could explain your situation and how it would be really important for you to get that time in summer, blablabla.

the winter vacation is longer and you should be able to get all 3 weeks in winter, but remember they are working days. With weekends your summer vacation can fill up a nice chunk of time.

So your camp is probably going to run from like july 24th to Aug. 15th. there is a national holiday in there also that won't count against your vacation days. So you would likely have August 15th off until the start of your term. it might not be an exact 10 working days, but it will be close.

When summer starts to roll around, sit down with your CT and get a firm answer on summer camp times. Any vacation days trump summer camp times and your gepik coordinator can help you if the school won't sign off on giving you all your days.

Oh yea? I might still have my bankbook around from when I worked for GEPIK. They paid me for overtime during summer and winter break because I didn't take vacation days. I didn't do any deskwarming, I taught camps. In April that year, the head English teacher came to me and told me I would need to take vacation time for winter near the end of April. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to use those winter vacation days.

I wouldn't assume you will get 3 weeks vacation time in winter, but it does seem reasonable. Talk to them and ask. They might prefer you take time off at a different time than 3 weeks together.

Thanks everyone. You've been a lot of help. I talked to my co-teacher about it today but she's still not sure and said that she would talk to my head-teacher. I don't care WHEN the vacation is, as long as I get it.

Check your hours to make sure you are being compensated for any extra work during the summer. It is quite possible you should be paid overtime.

I did about 6 or 7 extra hours.

You have 20 working days plus 14 (consecutive) days (end of contract). You are entitled to them. The school has to honor that. If they give you trouble, you can contact your GEPIK coordinator to help mediate. You don't necessarily have to be a stickler for all the days, but you should be able to visit your friend, especially if you plan ahead.
