Please explain what it is, how much thewy cost and how to get one.

I'm in PRC and need one for youtube and facebook, if I decide I miss them. Which is not really likely as it's been 7 weeks now and I realise just how needless and really pointless they are now, but still, would be nice to be clued in.

A VPN is a network your computer connects to. That network will then connect to websites for you. So if you have a VPN service located in the US and you connect to that VPN, websites you visit (youtube, netflix, etc.) will think you are located in the US.
VPNs also provide some sort of security encryption so the data you upload and download is kept private to some extent.
They can cost anywhere from free to maybe around $10 USD a month. I personally paid about $60 USD I think for a year.
Depending on what you're using it for, you may want to look into the features they give you. Things like speed, bandwidth, security, price... For example, some VPNs don't allow torrents while others do.
Try to look for ones that allow you to test their service out first or at least give you some amount of time before allowing you to get a refund. Some services will be faster depending on location and their servers. Or some may not be able to connect at all. My VPN works almost flawlessly at home, but it won't even connect at work for some reason, not sure why.

I am on a strongvpn package now. It is good for netflix and using gmail for free phone calls because I look like my computer is in California. Strongvpn will warn you and dump you if you use torrents.

Astrill was not as consistent but allowed torrenting. Astrill let you switch between multiple server locations around the globe pretty much as you wanted from within software, but speeds differed. Strong lets you switch a very limited number of times before you pay. Strong is better for netflix.

I believe both have different levels of China-specific services.
