Early on in my tenure in Korea, Buddhist monks were literally fighting in the streets with pipes and ladders. Yes, ladders. Some internal leadership struggles it was reported.

I've seen many (presumably fake ) monks in soju bangs with soju, tobacco and female companionship. With meat/seafood anju. And more soju....

Nonsense. The article says they were gambling with more than 1 billion won [$875,300](!!). Thats money that was presumably donated. Thats not 'just being human'. It wasnt even money that belonged to them but other people. Thats being criminal in the extreme. The smoking and drinking are perhaps excusable but as a Buddhist myself I just find the whole thing sad. These guys took an oath to rescind worldly property, pursuits and thoughts and dedicate their lives to Buddhist principles.

Yes..the whole thing is sad.
That they did this is sad.
That they are Buddhist monks is sad.
That there are Buddhist monks is sad.
That they took a religious oath is sad.
That people make religious oaths is sad.
etc...it's all pretty sad.

When it happens to people like Bush and the Goldman Sachs guys, then I'll join up with you on that.

What were they thinking? What were they planning to do with all that money? Buy custom-made gray robes? Get their hair shaved at a top-notch miyongsil? Get anti-sankapul surgery to look more meditative?

Yes, this whole stanza is pretty sad.
That someone actually wrote it is sad.
That someone took the time to write it is sad.
That there are people inane enough to write these kind of things is sad.
That there are people who dont make any kind of commitments is sad.
That there are people that scorn others that make lifetime commitments is pretty sad.
All in all its pretty sad.

Another total misrepresentation by Professor Chance. Buddhist monks do not in any way get supported by the state or any Govt organization for that matter.

Easy to sit on sidelines and make sarcastic remarks about those who actually try and make something of their lives. You may want to try it sometime....u may be surprised.
