Just an FYI, a good rule of thumb when posting links to articles is actually quoting it on the OP. It ain't that hard. I also consider it general internet etiquette to write at least a couple of sentences why you think it's an interesting article or why you think it's relevant to the forum. Otherwise it's a subtle method of trolling. It's not like people are incapable of getting news on their own.

Police plan to carry out a special crackdown on subway perverts from Monday until the end of September.
The move comes amid growing cases of women being illegally filmed on the Seoul subway with hidden cameras taking pictures up their skirts or other invasive shots.
According to data released by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on Thursday, the number of offenders increased to 186 in the second quarter of this year from 32 in the previous quarter.
The number reported in the first six months of the year, however, decreased by 33.4 percent from the same period last year.
�If we look at the crime by quarters, the number in the second quarter of the year is significantly higher than the first because women wear less clothing as the season changes,� said a police officer from the police�s subway investigation team.
�In winter, there were fewer crimes because people wear thicker clothes. But as spring and summer arrive, women�s clothes become lighter and more revealing. This contributes to the increase in hidden camera crimes.�
About 40 percent of the illegal filming took place on line 2, followed by line 1 with 25.4 percent, line 4 (11.4 percent) and line 7 (7.3 percent). Line 3 had the lowest rate at 4.5 percent.
By time slot, crimes were committed most during commuting hours between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., accounting for 48.8 percent of the total.
Incidents were highest on trains, accounting for about 50 percent followed by acts inside the subway station with 38.9 percent and 9.7 percent on the platform.
By day, Fridays saw the most cases with 19.8 percent followed by Wednesday and Thursday with 19.6 and 18.7 percent respectively. Crimes on the weekends, however, were low at 9.5 percent and 3.4 percent each for Saturdays and Sundays.
�We usually catch offenders during a stakeout or by boarding the subway train with them. Our subway investigation squad operates in rotation all day,� said the officer.
Meanwhile, the police, Seoul Metro and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family held a campaign Thursday at 16 subway stations in Seoul to prevent subway crimes by handing out leaflets to citizens warning them about possible risks and distributing whistles to women. |
Anyway, this shouldn't come as a surprise to people who have lived here long enough. Although I personally, can't find a logical reason for wanting to take pictures of random womens' underwear. You can get that easily enough online, or better, you can also find porn online too. |

When it's really really packed on the subways, I hold my phone in my hand and both hands are up near my neck / under my chin in full view. I've adopted this posture because I won't be thought of as a pervert. My arm / hand won't accidentally brush against a woman as the car load of people shift. I don't stare at the ground either. Look ahead and up so people can see your eyes in a positive, confident, and assertive stance, not something hidden and possibly looking down some girls top.
It might sound retarded, but when your usually the only white guy in a crowd of 1000, all eyes are naturally on you. I'd rather not give anyone any suspicions or reasons to be. I hate being judged here, so I give them nothing to judge.
Jut a thought. I find I get less confrontational stares.
One time, a girl in a short skirt gave me a dirty look because I was behind her as she and I approached a set of stairs. I know what she was thinking. In broken Korean I blasted her with something to the effect of "don't flatter yourself; you're not pretty enough to look at". Her expression was priceless. I passed by here and went up the stairs in front of her. She eventually ended up at the same bus stop as me. I still remember her look of shame and deflated ego.
I guess my point is; don't let them have anything to hold over you. The name of the game is cover your a$$.
As for the perverts out there, I hope they get the snot beat out of them because they're wrecking my peaceful existence in Korea. |

lol are you serious?! I'd better be damn well 100% sure that was what she was thinking if I went and "blasted" her. I sure hope you were sure that was what she was thinking. Haha pretty funny nonetheless, though. |

I usually just try to act as uninterested in them as much as possible. Or keep my distance. A lot of times if a guy stands near a girl, she becomes visibly nervous and/or she'll move away or turn to face the guy so she can see if he's up to something. I used to think women were being paranoid but after finding out how many perverts Korean women encounter in their lifetime, I came to understand their sentiment. As a guy I guess I wasn't really that observant to those kinds of things. |

| I've always found it strange the girls who will wear a short skirt or short shorts and then hold their bag behind their ass when climbing stairs. If it is uncomfortable for you to wear them, don't wear them! |

Can't read the actual document unless you pay for it but there's a summary.

When I first got here in 2004, I was amazed to see the amount of drunk girls stumbling home alone at night. I just figured that Seoul was really that safe. The cute drunk girls could be heard from a block or two away by the sound of the imperfect clicking pattern of their high heels. It's almost an announcement of "here comes an easy target".
I still want to believe Korea is safe and the girls get home without a problem. Especially when there are soooo many outlets that let men have their "fun", I just can't see a justifiable reason for rape in this country. |

Yeah it's all kind of confusing. Just like the violent crime stats in the other thread, what I see everyday doesn't correspond with the stats. Then again, I've been to places known as dangerous areas in the US, and never had a problem there either.
Being a guy observing things and actually being a woman is probably a lot different. Although it still confuses me why young women would get smashed and pass out on the street then get paranoid enough to cover their skirts with their bags while walking up the stairs.

They have women only seats on the buses here and like everything else, it doesn't seem to be enforced. I see ajoshis sitting on those pink seats all the time. When all the other seats are taken, I sit on them too and nobody says anything. My girlfriend who might have a skewed view since she's a feminist, told me it sucks being a woman in Korea.
I wonder if criminalizing prostitution would drive up sex related crimes since guys would have a harder time accessing prostitutes. |
