Update on page 5
The Costco website reports that Costcos may have to close two Sunday's each month. It's up to the different local governmental bodies. Ajumma and Adjoshi selling leaves in a farmer's market think that if Costco closes, and Koreans can't get onions and mustard, then they will make a fortune.

Think of all the onions, mustard and ketchup that Costco will save on those 2 Sundays a month. |

Truckloads.
I just want to know how the Farmer's Markets view Costco as a rival. It's more of a supplier to those kind of merchants. |

Some of the retailers are already suing the various local governments, this won't stand up in court and won't last long. |

Most people go to Costco like once a month anyways. I haven't gone to Costco in three months....I really need to go. |

Closing Costco is just plain stupid. It's a totally different group of consumers, more upscale and westernized. In fact, they may be among the most westernized shoppers in Korea. |

Costco should make an example out of this council: if you pass this legislation, we will DEFINITELY lay off workers. For each hour, you make us shut, an employee is let go.
Then put up signs in ALL costcos to let people know what is going on. Include pictures and phone numbers of ALL council members.
That should solve the problem fairly quickly. |

The quote "You can't fight City Hall" was made for a reason.
Assuming Costco would do such a thing what stops the council from saying "Fine. For each employee you lay off your property taxes increase by 5%."
Or simply point out that if Costco does such a thing, council will just publicize the fact as a FOREIGN company laying off KOREAN employees.
Which is not exactly going to win Costco many local fans. |

That must explain the absolute 'startled' stare I got from some 아저씨 while I was with my non-Korean yet Korean-looking Asian partner in Costco. |

Except the court already ruled against the plaintiffs in one of the cases. |

They'd prob pull a Wal Mart or Carrefour and just leave. Shame Korea in some way tries to regulate everything. In some ways, its easier to start many types of businesses. But, if there's too much success, they try to rein it in. English academies one other example of this. |

The problem is the know-nothing civil servants who are guaranteed tenure for passing a multiple choice test on some inane topic that has nothing to do with their potential for performance on the job. I honestly think they should evaluate them at each level in the hierarchy and fire the bottom 10% and promote the top 10%. And fire anyone who's not promoted at least once every five years ("up or out"). The civil service organization in this country is completely bloated and inefficient and needs some SERIOUS slimming down.
Korea is not a major business hub that it wants to be for a reason. And 99.9% of that reason lies with the bloated, inefficient and just plain old incompetent government. There's no accountability because nobody gets fired. If they screw up royally, they SHOULD be fired. |

I rather doubt Costco is going to risk this over one store.

Costco reports that its most recent warehouse openings in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea had record-breaking opening-day sales, and that the warehouse they opened in Australia was particularly well-received. The company expects these countries to be great places for continued expansion. |
Closing 2 Sundays a month is hardly undue hardship.
And Wal-Mart and Carrefour were losing money which is why they pulled out. As long as Costco is making money, they are not going anywhere. |

Its actually ALL Costco stores - check the individual location sites online. It's also every EMart, Homeplus, and LotteMart - the super supermarkets as they are called. Also, Walmart was bought and forced out by EMart. And the civil servants have nothing to do with it. It's a political thing. At the national level they passed a law. Now, at the local levels, they have to determine how to enforce it. Some places are saying 2 days a month they must be closed, some are specifying when, some are saying reduced hours - it's all over the place.
Seriously, keep up with the news. This was decided and voted on months ago, and there were signs in the stores about it for some time now. ANd lots of Koreans have protested it. Apparently, I'm not the only one who enjoys my 2 am shopping runs to Homeplus - plenty of Koreans who work long hours have said that now they have NO time to go to the store.
Balls all around. |

No, it's not. Some Emarts will not close. The Starcity Emart for example will not close as it's in the shopping center and I believe their contract with the complex requiring they open outweighs this.
you can get the nationwide list of e-marts here:
http://store.emart.com/branch/eventnotice/eventnotice_view.jsp?id=470&seq=15062
It's about 10 emarts in Seoul but there are more than that here. |
