Hi - so I was wondering if it's easy to get hired at a summer camp without a work visa? Or easy to find an English teaching job/jobs without one? I ask because my bf is a student in Europe, and will have the summer off, but needs to work. (He can work where he is, but it would be so nice to have him here...) The thing is, he's not from one of the approved native English speaking countries - but he grew up overseas, attending international schools, and is perfectly fluent (it's his "best" language), and accentless - or rather, he sounds like a hard-to-place American. I was wondering how feasible/legal his getting a summer job/jobs in the Seoul area would be. I've met/heard of non-natives being hired (even at public schools) for stints to hold the school over as they look for a visa holding teacher.
My bf is great with kids, is patient, and is attractive, young, blondish hair/light-eyed. (Not that any of the physical should matter, but people always bring it up on here, so I thought I'd pre-emptively let you know:)).
Anybody know anyone who's done summer work here, or have any suggestions? |

Teachers don't hold the visa the school does. There is no visa without the job/sponsor first.
There is "0" chance of legal work for him UNLESS he is from a country that is in the list (reciprocal treatment policy) for granting of "working tourist" visas. Camps are allowed but working at a hagwan is not. Other work is also possible.
If he is on an EU passport (other than from the UK or Ireland) then the answer is a flat out no chance for legal work in a kids camp or as a teacher (even if he had his degree already - and as a student I suspect he does not).
All that said, if he is willing to fly and risk it on his own dime then there is illegal work to be had but working illegally at camps usually ends up with the illegal employee not being paid (or massive deductions being made from what they expected to be paid - tax rates of 27%for taxes that will never be paid), no airfare and a high risk of being caught (immigration still does regular sweeps of "English Camps") as part of their summer routine.
