And...

Are there motels near the beach?
How much are they?
Any decent bars in Gangneung?

The beach doesn't have to be amazing but has to be nicer than Anmyeondo which I saw last year. Wasn't impressed at all.

Thanks.

As far as Korean beaches go, yeah, it's actually quite nice.

Plenty of motels/hotels nearby. Can't help you on the costs though.

The best bar is "Bon Voyage." Not usually very crazy if that's what you're in to, but a great atmosphere, drink selection, and the owner is topnotch. If you want something (potentially) a bit more wild, there's a bar called "Rush." If you want a booking club, then that's "Charisma"...That's quite an experience.

Thanks for that Patrick.

Gonna take a trip over there in a couple of weeks so.

How about Gangneung city itself. Is that nice? Are those bars you mentioned in Gyeongpodae or Gangneung?

If you're in to Korean culture at all, there's actually a halfway decent festival in Gangneung starting this weekend and going until the end of June:

The festival is along the stream downtown.

The bars I mentioned are not near the beach, but in downtown Gangneung. Bon Voyage is in Tekgi (sorry for the terrible romanization), which is a nice and trendy area with some good restaurants and cafes. I went to Tekgi about 2 weeks ago for the first time in awhile, and it seemed considerably nicer than before. A few new bars and restaurants that I wanted to check out, but prior obligations prevented me from doing so.

Rush is in the heart of downtown near Home+ and McDonalds. Charisma is over by the train station. They may sound far apart, but civilized Gangneung isn't very big.

A taxi from downtown to Gyeongpo should cost ~6000 won.
If you do take a taxi to Gyeongpo, I recommend telling the driver to take you to "Hyundai Hotel." That's the start of the nicest stretch of beach.
