Quote:
Children from racial and ethnic minorities now account for more than half the births in the US, according to estimates of the latest US census data.

Black, Hispanic, Asian and mixed-race births made up 50.4% of new arrivals in the year ending in July 2011.

It puts non-Hispanic white births in the minority for the first time.

Sociologists believe the ongoing economic slowdown has contributed to a greater decline in birth rates among white people.

I'm not particularly concerned. As you can see in this article (and thanks in part to George Zimmerman) "Hispanic" is now considered a particular type of "White", unless you specify "non-Hispanic White".

Doesn't mean a thing to me, other than that I consider those who are worried about "the non-whites taking over" to be bigots. The issues of skin color, ethnic origin, and religious persuasion are supposed to be irrelevant. Not one of those three things is what makes someone an American.

In the article it states "number of people in the US who are 65 or older increased by 1.1m to 41.4m." Wow! That's amazing! What is that 4,000 % increase! Amazing! Laughing Laughing Rolling Eyes

Why should it mean anything? I'm all for it. I'm of mixed ancestry myself, though I usually pass as white.

As for the Spanish language becoming more and more prevalent, with a couple months of intensive studying (I really want to go to Spain for a while to brush up, as I've lost a lot of my Spanish ability since moving here, which upsets me, because I used to work in a bilingual medical office and was usually fine,) I'd be back to my upper-intermediate/low-advanced level. The US never declared a national language, so there's nothing wrong with Spanish (or anything else)being popular (though I'd vote for Spanish, as it's the only one I'd be good at!) Plenty of nations speak more than one language fluently. It would be nice if more Americans were at least bilingual.

NYG - I'm not saying it SHOULD mean anything and the immediate and obvious defensiveness suggests deep down that you all know there ARE issues, whether there SHOULD be or not and whether YOU have any or not. Wink It also makes immediate assumption of a suggestion that what it might mean would be negative aspects. What people don't say is often more revealing than what they do say, hmmm.

That aside, I don't beleive it means nothing to everyone. Maybe it means GOOD THINGS to you? Though, tellingly enough, the immediate defensive reaction speaks of politically correct paralasys more than anything else.

Me personally, if my country were having the same issues (it is) I would feel uncomfortable going from growing up in a country to end up a minority and perhaps even ending up speaking my native language as a minority language.

I don't mean this in a 'oh my gawd he's a dum dum dum... racist!' way but obviously the trend the article reports means a very changing face of America. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Just to be very clear here.

I'm just interested in what it means to Americans (or even non Americans.)

I didn't mean to come off as defensive, and I apologize if it seemed that way. I think it's great, as long as citizens (native or naturalized) follow the laws. That whole "honor killing" garbage going on in Canada (and plenty of other cases, but it's been publicized there) is unacceptable. Also, my friend's immigrant parents got paid in cash and paid no taxes, and she was able to go to university for peanuts, because of their financial status, which was completely bogus.

I'm not being defensive. I'm being observant. I've heard--in person--far too many people complaining about "Spanish supplanting English" and "the US will no longer be a Christian nation" and, the one I find the most disgusting of all: "The robin doesn't mate with the bluejay."

Personally, I'm all for the country being more multi-cultural. I see that as a good thing, not something to fear.

Sultan: Rest assured that I am not calling you bigoted. Furthest thing from my mind, that.

South Park joked about it well, but basically, we're on our way towards the whole world being a kind of tan-white color with everyone having the same features. The era of homogeneous societies is over. The invention of the airplane started it and it's only accellerated. Someday in the future there won't be races like there are now, only the tan people and the slightly less tan people.

By 1.1m not from 1.1m. So no it's not a 4,000% increase, more like 2%.

What it means is Mexico will take California, Arizona, and New Mexico back.

Then there'll be a war once again when they try to take Texas.
