I've accepted a job at a school in Seoul and have been told that I must get a health check right when I come to Korea for the ARC and I must pay for it and they generally cost around 100,000 won. I already knew that I had to get one for the ARC, but do teachers usually pay for their own health checks or is that something the employers usually cover? Either way I'll have to do it, but I'm just curious.

I've worked for both EPIK and Hakwons and have always had to pay for my own health check

Thank you, good to know. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being taken advantage of or anything like that.

I had to pay for mine and I worked in a public school. Check your contract, but I'm pretty sure everybody has to.

My school paid for mine and the other 3 new teachers who arrived that day.

I think I've paid both times, I definitely did this year. I kind of enjoyed doing it actually. It felt like a milestone going and getting it done myself, because last year I did it on my first full day in Korea with my CT in charge of everything. My new CT tries to baby me a bit so I didn't even tell her where I was going. Just slipped out and asked the VP then promptly removed myself from the premisis so she wouldn't insist on going with me and driving me there

I paid like $70 for a medical exam, but had been paid a $300 settlement allowance to help with beginning costs.

If they say you need to pay for it, that's the way it is. I wouldn't make a stink about it either, just get it done and move on.
