...discover the Rock bar in Bupyeong.
I have also been the first non-korean person to visit at least one rural village that I know of.
Any other pioneers here? |

eat kimchi and use chopsticks, judging by the reactions I get when I do those things.
"You like kimchi? Not too spicy?"
"Can you use chopsticks?" (Asked by someone who is aware that I had lived in Korea for 6 years at the time.) Yes, my Korean friend, after 6 long years of painful study, I was able to finally able to clumsily maneuver food into my mouth with a pair of chopsticks. |

I wouldn't be too sure about your pioneering status. I've known at least two Americans here who were told they were the first ever black people in town. I know of at least one other black South African who was teaching here years before either of them. This is a city of 200'000+ people. There were probably black people here during the Korean war. |

In terms of actually being the first foreigner in a place I expect the Korean War went some way to preventing us taking a lot of firsts.
Having said that I've passed through or stopped at some tiny villages well off the beaten track when I've gotten lost on scooter rides. If I wasn't the first white person in any of these places I'm pretty confident I was the first Brit.
When my Swedish cousin was visiting I kept getting the idea that he was probably the first Swede to do a lot of things round here. I wonder if he was even the first Swedish person to visit this city (population 300k) |

I was the first foreigner to win the Korean Professional Boxing Rookie Championship:

...and I imagine I was the first Canadian to deliver pizzas (I was sick of my classmates in my Korean class improving faster than me, so I started delivering pizzas as a weekend job, to practice Korean). |

Ahh the rock bar and their 5000 won 3L pitchers. Looked out of business last time I went by there.
How can you trust a few people's opinions that you are the first of a specific nationality to visit a large city? Do they check passports and ask at the city gates?
In small villages it can be a little easier....but again first foreigner?
One villager to another:
Did you notice that Chinese person walk into our village?
Nope, he looked Korean.
Was he really the first foreigner since Japanese occupation and the Korean war?
Let's just let him believe it.
I know I have been the first recognized foreigner to walk into a few shops and neighborhoods. |

You're actually kinda famous in boxing circles I think. Are there other foreigners who have won the tournament? There was an American GI who participated this year but he lost in his first bout. |

Thanks man. Yeah, my buddy Justin, from P.E.I., won the next tournament.
You mentioned the G.I. that fought this year; he was matched REALLY tough. Not a bad fight, though. |

That's pretty awesome mate. Both of them actually. I tried to go to a boxing gym here and was told to leave as soon as I set foot through the door. 'No foreigners, only Korean' the guy said.
I've always thought it would be quite fun riding about delivering pizzas but only if you get to ride a bit between deliveries and aren't always jumping on and off. |
