I was planning on bringing my camping stuff along with me to Korea next month. I have a small 8lb 1 man tent and a sleeping bag as the bare minimums that I would want to bring along. The problem is that since this is my first time over I'll already be bringing a good deal of stuff with me and I don't think I'll have room for the tent and sleeping bag.

I did UPS' estimated shipping cost thing and it said for 10 lbs at 30" X 12" X 12" I'd be looking at $470. Holy cow!

I guess this is just an open conversation type question. Did anyone pack their tent/camping stuff? Has anyone shipped their gear? Is this stuff available for cheap purchase in SK? Should I bother bringing it at all?

Lastly, am I packing too much other stuff if I can't find room for a small tent and sleeping bag in 3 pieces of luggage?

leave it all behind - Koreans love to camp and you can find everything you need - and more - probably cheaper as well.

about the only items I would suggest are DEET and good cotton, cotton-wool and wool socks - most socks here are poly-blends, there are some woolblends but western styles are by far superior - Korea in general doesn't have many natural fiber items.

*also* I'd ditch that tent in any event - I have a 1-person expedition tent that weighs in under 2 kg, absolutely love it.

I brought allot of my gear here. And I have used it exactly once.
Why? Camping in Korea is just lame. It is not a beautiful country. And
if there is a spot to camp there are usually a million other people there.
Oh and you can't camp in any of the mountains. If you are caught it is something like a 500 dollar fine.

So don't bring your gear.

Also an 8lb one man tent?! Ya know they have 27 ounce one man tents now right?

I just looked it up. It says it weighs 5 lbs, so not quite 8. It also sleeps 2 pretty comfortably (if you're dating the second person), but it's really a 1 man. It's a couple years old and it was pretty cheap. I didn't want to shell out the dough for an ultra-light, top of the line tent.

I think I'll just buy something cheap once I get there and get settled/need one for some reason.

Don't bring it, most likely you won't use it. Imagine you live in NYC with no mode of transportation other than taxi's and the subway, how much camping would you be doing?

You're wasting luggage space that would be better filled with just about anything other than a tent.

What! What! What! I camp all the time here in Korea. Last weekend I enjoyed a beautiful beach all to myself and my family. The country is 80% mountains and has ocean on three sides. There are some great places in Korea. It does help to have a car though.

In the last nine years, I've seen a few tents go through buy/sell - fantastic deals that cheap-o teachers barely touched but that someone like you OP, would jump on for pure camping value.

Really good deals.

There are a lot of cheap accommodation options here. You can also get a lot of cheap gear at the big department stores or from small stores that import stuff from China. It'll probably only last you for one season but it beats having to lug it here when you'll really only use it only a few times.

Like a previous poster said, bring wool socks. There's not as widely available here, and the ones you do find will be more expensive than back in the States.

I went camping in America once (can't remember if it was the US or Canada), and there were like 100 hundred other families at the camp site. It SUCKED. I strongly suggest never camping in America as well. I'll take the poster's advice regarding Korea as 100% useful too. So avoid America (all of it) and Korea. I also met a dude who went camping once in Australia and it rained, so I'd skip that too. Also I saw a documentary (Hostel) about people trying to have a nice time in Europe, and it SUCKED, so I wouldn't bother there either.

Also I tried camping in Moscow, and it was ugly, so don't try that. Ugh.

If you want I got a marmot limelight 2 for sale. 150 bucks. About 6 months old. weighs in at 5 lbs. Definitely not ultralight but at least you wont have to pack yours with you.

My point is that Korea has destroyed about 90% of its wilderness. I mean 100 years ago there were tigers at Bukansan. Allot of camping here is campsites. And those are lame everywhere. I stand by what I wrote. Korea is just not a physically impressive country. Compared to places like Canada or America, it's ugly. There just isnt the geological beauty of other countries. It has one nice area, Soraksan, and that is about it.

I'm not in country yet. Arriving in just about two weeks. Then I'm sure I'll have other things to worry about for a while as far as expenses go. If you're still around and have the tent in say a month or so I might be interested.
