Hi I wonder if someone can help me.

I want to move apartment. I have a 12 month lease that expired in January (2012 년 1월 10 일 까지로 한다) and I want to move in August. My realtor told me that my rental agreement automatically renewed for another year and so I'll have to pay the landlord a fee - first he said 260 000 but this kinda quickly came down to 100 000.

Is this usual? I assumed because the 12 months was up I would be fine to give 30 days notice (as a matter of fact I'm actually giving 90 days anyway).

Anyway if you've got any knowledge about this please let me know. Thanks cb

What does your lease agreement say?

Stop "assuming" and read the agreement.

In Korea if no one objects the rental agreement is automatically renewed for another term.

Wildbore: I doubt the lease agreement addresses post-lease terms, thats an area covered by convention & law.
alongway: I think you're partially right. If nobody speaks up, the monetary terms of the agreement stay the same for another term, but the issue of notice comes into play.

I've left apartments in that post-lease phase with about 2 months notice, without penalty. I've also been asked to move out with just one month's notice, but they could only do that because they were moving relatives in.
