Today I was at Costco and the cashier asked if I needed a tax receipt, when I said no he looked kind of surprised.

Costco always gives you a regular receipt for them to check on your way out, but I wonder what's with this special tax receipt. I've been casually asked if I need a tax recipt many times and at many places but the cashier/worker has never looked surprised by the fact that I didn't need it before.

I've worked mostly at hagwons and for 1 year at a public school since arriving in Korea 4 years ago, my employer has always done my taxes for me.

Isn't it pretty standard for your employer to do your taxes for you?

Why would I need a tax recept for purchases made at Costco etc..???

Thanks!!!

Shocked

Well, obviously, if you employer does your taxes for you, you would get a larger tax refund by providing him with the additional tax receipts.

Did you pay with cash? Perhaps the cashier was talking about a cash receipt. You can get a card that tracks your cash spending within Korea, and you get an additional tax refund for all the purchases that you can prove were made within Korea. The card is sometimes called a tax-save card.

My wife and I have been here for almost 4 years. Public school the whole time. The first 2 years we didn't pay taxes. The start of our third contract neither oif our schools payed taxes for the whole year. Come tax time we had to pay a whole years taxes in one month.

With the receipts you could possibly get a refund. Receipts for medical, cash, and credit cards are the ones I would keep and turn in around tax time. You can also register your phone number and enter it when you spend over 5,000 in cash.
