Would anyone here mind sharing their experiences on having your contract extended for 1 semester.

My public school position would like for me to stay for one extra semester, however I want to know what to watch out for.

I was already told a little about the contract and I'm rather annoyed.

The said that because it's only half a year, that I wouldn't get the 14 days home-trip/renewal vacation and that I would only get 10 days vacation total since it's only half a year.

I also wouldnt be able to rollover vacation days leftover from the current year (which I'll be screwed on because Gyeonggi province cut summer vacation) to 2012-13 because the current contract doesnt allow it.

I was originally doing this as a favor to my school (very rural) to give them time to find a new teacher, but it keeps sounding like the "modified" contract is hardly in my favor.

After three years here, what was I supposed to expect? Laughing

Rolling the vacation over from last year is a labor law issue and they lose.
(labor standards act).

The vacation time for renewal is negotiable with your principal. The travel allowance should be 1/2 AND get your ticket home at the end of the extension.

If they want to play loose = end your contract, take your holidays, severance and exit allowance then negotiate a new 6 month contract that is acceptable to you.

Ttompatz,

To clarify do you mean that I should get 1/2 of my trip home travel allowance (for the renewal trip) in addition to my paid flight home based on labor law or is this something that I should negotiate myself based on principle?

I should add that I attend a GEPIK school so it's rarely an allowance as much as a reimbursement.

Depends on the old contract you were/are under.
The flight/travel allowance is a contractual matter and NOT a labor board issue and it IS negotiable.

You should (past personal experience) get the vacation (14 days) between contracts, airfare home and back.

You would lose the flight out at the end of the contract (6 months complete but not the full year).

Someone is playing loose with the budget.

Take your end of contract (make sure you get the flight money and severance owed) and negotiate for the new 6-month contract.
If you don't like what is offered, don't stay. The losses you talk about come up to a couple months worth of wages - do you really want to work 6 months and net 4 months worth of remuneration.
