I received a public school job offer in Paju City, the description says the school is about 15 min. from the rail station (I'm betting it's more around 25 min, but I'm fine w/that).

Curious if anyone has lived there, and what it's like? I know it's fairly close to Ilsan and Gumcheon (sp?) and abt 1.5 hours from Seoul. Is it really isolated otherwise, though? And how is the area near the rail station?

Paju, depending on which stop you're at...is pretty far from Seoul...definitely 90 minutes from some parts of Paju. You could get creative about taking a combination of subway and bus...you might be able to shave it down. How important is being near Seoul to you?

Thank you for your reply, PaperTiger. The recruiter said the school was near the Paju Stop, by Doowon Technical College.

I'm fairly impartial about being near Seoul-- it'd be nice, but it's not a must have for me. My bigger concern is whether or not there are things like grocery stores where I can find some western food, cafes or coffee shops where I can do work, a foreigner community, etc, nearby, or if I'm going to have to constantly trek to Geumchon or Ilsan (and if they're a hassle to get to). Would it be worthwhile for me to request housing in Geumchon instead of near the school?

Thank you again for your reply, I appreciate it!

I dunno bout living but i go there to shop at the outlet malls. Ilsan is about a 20 min bus ride away. I live in Ilsan and from here, takes about an hour to get to Seoul. You can find all the western stuff you want in Ilsan though.

i don't actually know where paju station is but i work in the town/city whatever it is. where i work is painfully boring, a few coffee shops, daiso, PB and 7-11.

i may be in a far flung part of paju but i wouldn't choose to live there. i'm much happier living in seoul and travelling the 2.5-3 hours a day though i know that's not for everyone.

Hi Fezmond. Do you take a subway or bus (or combination of both) from Seoul to Paju? And I take it it's 2.5-3 for the round trip commute?

Depends where in Paju you are.

If you are at the 'Paju' rail stop, its close to Geumchon, which also has all the amenities you are used to (like grocery stores). I'm sure they are where you live as well, but whenever I meet Pajuites they told me Geumchon was their place to meet up.

Meeting foreigners isn't difficult, there are buses to Uijeongbu (north of Seoul), Ilsan and Seoul. there are no bus maps, but know that the 909 bus goes from Munsan to Seoul and 200/2200 leave from Heyri to Seoul. Bus service may be more convenient, but rail is more reliable.

There are some threads on here, if you do a search. It seems as though is wasn't too good before but management changes have transformed it into a place you would enjoy; plenty of other foreigners if you're likely to get lonely or homesick, regular trips to Seoul, a good teaching support network etc. I don't have personal experience but I might be able to give more info when my Korean co-teacher get back from there on Thursday.

for me it's about 2.5-3 hours round trip. always more coming back because if i miss the bus or train connection i'll be sitting around for 15 mins til the next one comes.

i walk about 15 mins to the station and then subway up to tanhyeon. bus from there to the nearest stop to my workplace. i may be on the outer edges on paju - haesolmauel. i really have no idea where i am in relation to other places.
