I've been applying for jobs and I came across a job that looks really good, but the only problem is that they want my Social Security number. I really don't feel comfortable giving this out and wonder why they would need this information. Is this common when applying for jobs in Korea? If so, what do they need my SS# for?

no, it is not, I repeat, absolutely NOT required and you are under no obligation whatsoever to provide it to anyone outside the U.S., much less to a foreign entity (school).

and that's exactly what I said to my p.s. when they asked, even tho then I was hired and working in Seoul. I believe they wanted it then in regards to tax issues (American teachers don't pay any taxes the first 2 yrs in Korea) but all the same, I refused and that was the end of it.

Really? What kind of job. I could see maybe for public school, so they could register you for tax purposes, but thinking about it, I would just ask for it later when I hired the person.

If this is a hagwon, then I would likely say no. Remember with the SS and application you have just handed a person the ability to steal your identity.

Identity theft is quite possibly the cause, especially if it is a general site for any work abroad. I have recently been sent similar emails asking for my information. One was for cruise ship positions with pay claiming to be "Company Remuneration range from 4,000.00 Great British Pounds to 10,000.00 Great British Pounds Monthly." to be a Guest Room Attendant Razz

Those are some "great" British pounds. Sorry "Capt. Daniel Ballet", but I'll pass.

Sounds fishy to me... During my job search I used 4 different recruiters and interviewed for about 13 different schools and no one ever mentioned anything about my SS number (this was for a hagwon position).
