I recently applied for a job requiring apostille of my degree.

I think they want me to get the crest seal on the actual original document.

First of all, it is my impression that this request is insane. I just don't want anybody writing or printing anything on my original degree parchment, period. Is my position unreasonable? I think it is reasonable to want everybody to lay off the degree. If I missed something I'd appreciate being updated.

Second, are institutions now no longer accepting apostilles of copies of the degree?

The apostille, for my country, is a seal on a separate document attached to the original (stapled for instance). The apostille makes your degree a legal document.

An apositlle, according to wikipedia, can be a stamp or a form (in my case with a stamp on it) with several fields.

You don't apostille the original.

You get a certified true copy made (usually by a notary) and have the apostille affixed to that true copy.

Ttompatz' has it.

Go to your bank, they usually have a free notary service for members. Get a true copy made and notarized. Take or mail that true copy with the original degree and the fee to your Secretary of State and they should return it all back to you.

Check your SOS's website to make sure there isn't anything else you might need to supply to get an apostille cause many state's have different requirements.

I've had a look at my bank (Natwest in the UK) and they don't seem to offer it - and all of the solicitors I've contacted so far charge 75! Does anyone know other places that could do the notarising for cheaper, in the UK? I don't know anyone who's ever had to have it done before either.

I asked around too but drew a blank so had to stump up the 80 for public notary. I'm sure some UK solicitors will do it cheaper but I didn't find one.
