Suppose you agree that they can't actually have gay marriages, not having a any homesexuals in Korea - which is nobody's fault, not even the Japanese' - but that they can have the *right* to have gay marriages. |

I'd never argue against equal rights for anyone, but aren't there more important human rights issues for Korea to be dealing with?
Besides, isn't copying Apple and Ralph Lauren enough? Do they now have to slavishly take up the U.S. issue du jour? |

What a surprise. The famous line, "no gays in Korea," again uttered by a group of foreigners. I'm sure there are few old-school Koreans who might claim this, but honestly I've never heard it during the many years I've lived here.
I've heard about plenty of gay couples from Korean friends. Even met one very nice gay Korean couple who talked candidly about a thriving gay scene in Seoul. I've seen Korean dramas and movies about gay/lesbian issues, but I've never heard a Korean say "There are no gays in Korea." On this forum, I've seen it many many times. Makes me wonder just exactly who believes this? Or maybe it's just the type of thing that some foreigners expect, or hope, or maybe even want Koreans to believe?
Anyway, it's BS. There are PLENTY of gays in Korea. And Koreans know it too. |

What Koreans know about their society and what they freely admit to foreigners are not always one in the same. |

Now it's same-sex marriage, next time it will be something else. It's better to have something done about human rights issues than nothing at all. |

I think that the people who post "there are no gays in Korea" have been here a long time. I remember talking to a co-teacher at my first school (back in '96) and she told me in no uncertain terms that there were no gays in Korea. When I argued the point that most gay people were still hiding because of the stigma that was put on gays, she just re-iterated that there were no gays in Korea.
We all know differently now, don't we? |

Kind of a misleading title. I thought a politician was looking to draft a bill or something.

Ain't that the truth. The comments posted on the original Korean article has quite a debate, which shows Koreans are fully aware of gay issues. |

"To which the great majority of Korean turn a blind eye." - And what do you suggest that Koreans do? You demand a result, yet you provide no sort of course of action.
I want peace in the Middle East. I would like to end world hunger. I want to stop genocide. What good does my stating an ideal end result do? Absolutely nothing.
Any sort of military action against North Korea would lead to the deaths of millions of Koreans, Chinese and Americans. Any sort of convoy sent to educate the nation would lead to their deaths and the deaths of those they teach. Honestly, the only scenario I can envision in which the status quo is overthrown is if there is a famine that is worse than the one in the 1990's and the people revolt or if there is a military coup d'�tat. |
