Hi all,

I've not had any success with the search feature.

Has anybody had success getting an overseas phone, with a Korean sim card, to work here? I have a UK Samsung 'Ace' (which is for sale here, too), also called model S5830. Two shops told me to take it to the local Samsung place, a Samsung place had no idea what I was on about, another phone place told me they'd need to charge me $50 and couldn't guarantee it'd work, haha. They also told me there was no Samsung place in town. They tried a Korean sim and, although it can pick up signals, it wouldn't connect to make a call.
Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused
Either they'd rather hit me up for a $60/month contract Rolling Eyes or the infrastructure isn't in place. Last time I checked I'm sure my phone, although UK spec, supports the Korean frequencies.

So, fellow Dave's ESLers ... any ideas? Thanks.

Two things - wrong area. First, this should have been posted in the Technology Sub-Forum.

Second - I think since it is from another country the phone may have to be registered with the proper Korean agency.

I am actually on the look out for that. Maybe more later.

An interesting FAQ site to check out.

http://waygook.org/index.php?topic=17106.0

The KT Expat blog site has alway been informative
http://expatblog.kt.com

Plus also search a bit more. This topic has been discussed before.

Another tip to remember is when asking here in Korea for something outside of the norm expect hassles. Many people (all over the world) do not want to expend the effort to think. Same with store staff and bureaucrats. Much easier to shrug shoulders and say no. Plus add in the language barrier.

Whoops, I totally forgot about the sub-forum.

Hey thanks for the info; yeah getting things outside of the box here is really difficult in restaurants and shops. Otherwise they're as nice as pie until I've paid, some after too.

I don't want to be shelling out 50 or 60 $ a month as I barely use a phone. I may just get a used one off of Craigslist or another website. It's a shame as I KNOW mine's compatible here. Maybe tomorrow I'll ask one of my colleagues about registering it here. I don't understand why you can only have one registered at a time. In the UK you can just buy one in a shop without any i.d. Of course we're not in the UK but I don't understand the logistics.

Ah well. I'll try the outline from Waygook tomorrow.

Thanks again !!
