Two schools in Texas are planning to track the whereabouts of students using tracking devices in ID cards.
According to the San Antonio Express-News ( http://www.mysanantonio.com/ ), over 6,000 high-school and middle-school students will have to carry around RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) System tags starting next fall...
They won't be the first students to be tracked in this way. Some California preschoolers have been outfitted with these tags...

America may be a lot of things but a beacon of democracy and land of the free it ain't. Seems their compass is broken and they are adrift.

| So many of our laws fall to state jurisdiction that there is an enormous amount of room for stupidity. This isn't to say that the Feds are any better, but using the absurdity that is Texas to project onto America at large isn't really fair. My home state allows gay marriage, has decriminalized pot, no capital punishment, and near universal health care coverage. Texas we are not. |

America hasn't been a beacon of freedom for awhile. Not sure how many people, including Americans, really believe that anymore.
It's too bad because San Antonio was one of my favorite cities. |

Clearly, San Antonio, Texas is not the beacon of freedom it claims to be.
Saint Anthony of Padua is turning in his grave.
Oh, if the first immigrants to San Antonio, forced there from the Canary Islands by plan of Marquis of San Miguel de Aguay and the dictates of the Spanish King; if they only knew what a place of coercion and compulsion their homeland had become. |

In Germany if the student doesn't show up to school, the police show up at the parents doorstep. This is hardly a reason to criticize the USA for a lack of democracy. The students are supposed to be in school and too many of them aren't. |

Putting aside for the moment the issue of teaching your children what/how/where you want...
Does Germany need RFID tracking for that, or does an attendance check do the job? |

That should be restated "America has never been a true democracy". While the senate does not represent equal constituencies and rarely the electoral vote goes against the popular vote, by and large the US is a democracy. The US is not a beacon of democracy? Then why is it that all these immigrants keep coming to the US. They must be attracted by something "popular" about the country. |

| I thought these were more for safety than anything else... that way, if a kid if abducted or runs away it will be easier to locate them. Of course, they could always throw them in the trash, lol... this seems a lot better for the preschoolers mentioned... they are more likely to wander off or get grabbed off the sidewalk/ lured with candy and such... |

It's called money and the false illusion that life will be better there because the country has a lot of money and freedom.
How wrong they are. |

Well, I'm guessing for most immigrants who move to the US, life is a lot better than wherever they came from. As seemingly crappy as the US has become, it's gotta be better than living in Afghanistan or Sudan or Mexico. |

At least in Afghanistan or Sudan or Mexico they aren't tagging high school kids with RFID chips to track them.
Like lambs to the slaughter and they follow blindly.

Never heard of truant officers? Kids must be in school by law and do not have the right to leave the premisses without the explicit permission of the faculty.
Many schools here in South Korea have these tags, by the way. |
