Hi,

My boyfriend and I are planning on applying to South Korea as a couple, but we are shocked at the cost of getting all our documents 'apostilled.' Most of the jobs we have looked at want an apostilled criminal record check and our degrees apostiled and as far as we can tell this is 30bucks per document! Can anyone offer any advice on getting everything sorted for applying please.

Nicole

There is no way around these costs, honestly. You have to get your documents notarized and then apostilled before they will be considered legally-binding in the eyes of a foreign country.

(I don't want to sound mean, but) if you are currently in a financial situation where $30 seems like a fortune, you should probably save up some money before coming over here. It is recommended to have at least $500 (per person) in savings just to tide you over for your first month here since your first payday will be a month after you start your job. Some jobs will give you amenities to tide you over, and other places won't even have toilet paper... it will amaze you how much small things like that will add up when you're not bringing in any money (no soap? no dishwashing liquid? no detergent? no broom? no sponges? etc, etc, etc)

Good luck!

Well it depends where you are from, doesn't it? Getting the stuff apostilled in South Africa costs nothing more than the trip to Pretoria, the actual apostille is free. Criminal background check takes about two weeks, the E2 visa two days to get provided you go to the embassy in person.
