I got a checklist from an employee of SMOE, and on it it states that if I am at "level H" I will need to complete a 100 hour TESOL/TEFL course. Does this mean that SMOE only hires people who have taken the course? The checklist always says to include your TESOL/TEFL if you have one, it never says it is mandatory. |

PS benefits, job in Seoul, lots of displaced Americans looking to pay down those massive student loans and no work at home for them means SMOE is highly competitive.
They can afford to be choosy. Chollanam-do on the other hand has a dearth of applicants and offers improved benefits for lower qualifications (just a BA/B.Sc.) as a result.

No and yes
It is a visa requirement = no.
Is it normally a job requirement = no.
With the excess of applicants for jobs in Seoul can the employer use it as a screening tool and choose only those applicants who have one = yes.
They are not obligated to hire everyone or even those who meet the bare minimum.
It is a competition and either get one to be competitive or lose out to those who do.
If you want to work for SMOE then get it.
If you don't care where in Korea you work then don't sweat it. You can find a job without it but it won't likely be working with SMOE.

I thought the basic TESOL certificate was a requirement now for public school positions.
As ttompatz said schools can be picky. Anything that can impress will improve your chances of being hired. |

I was under the impression that this was a Gyeonggido-specific change? Here in Gangwon I have not heard anything about TESOL certificates suddenly becoming a hard requirement. |

I don't have a contract nearby at the moment,but I think the max is 2.7, maybe 2.6.
You usually get a few afterschool classes aswell that can add anything from 120,000 - 500,000(If your lucky). |

Seems like they try to cap the formal payscale under 3 million. Kind of like selling things for $9.99, the psychology of a NET earning over 3 million is to be avoided to smooth things over with KETs, I think.
BUT, on the other hand, things like multi-school and rural 'bonuses' are paid on top of the formal pay, so not formally written on hiring contracts right up at the top, which is the important number as far as the politics goes. AND of course afterschools don't get added either.
So if you max out the formal payscale, get a couple of bonuses and some AS work, you can come out pretty good, no matter what the 'headline number' of pay is claimed to be in your province, city or whatever.
Still, money or not, today I find myself thinking again, just 48 weeks to go... |
