Dude, that would be a sweet job to be the only non-Korean taxi driver. Your Korean would probably have to be almost perfect to understand some of those older folks.

Speaking of which, what happens to taxi drivers who can't understand the address of the place the individual wants to go to? Could they get a fine that way too? What evidence would they need?

Obviously he did not realize how badly he smells to non-Koreans. Seriously..Seoul subway in the summer basically reeks of kimchi guff and baby nappy faeces.

Quote:
The Seoul Central District Court upheld a lower court ruling Sunday that acknowledged a 200,000-won fine imposed on the cabbie surnamed Koh.

Yippee! Political correctness has arrived in Korea!
maybe I can sue those ajosshis now for their racist under-their-breath comments. bring it on.

Star tip: get your taxis number written down before you get in.

if i had 100,000 won for every time a cabbie wouldn't take me somewhere because his taxi was pointed in the wrong direction i'd be a rich man today.

The moneys going into the pockets of the local government. Not the offended party.

What idiocy. Taxi drivers should be allowed to refuse passengers for any reason they like. What use is private property without the right to use it as one sees fit?

As far as I know they're licensed by the government and there are a set of rules laid out they agree to follow one of which is they have to take any passenger that comes (unless it's dangerous)
Otherwise most cabbies would reject any short fare. In fact about 3 years ago when my girlfriend got back after her bus got delayed several hours, it was too late to take the last train. We didn't really live that far from the bus depot, only 2 subway stops, but walking, it would have been well over an hour, plus dragging her bag the whole way. It took forever to find a taxi that would take us, and once we were on our way the guy got a phone call and complained to his buddy the whole time about what a short distance he was taking a fare at that time of night.

do you guys think restaurants, saunas and shops should also be allowed to refuse service to people for any reason they like?

the taxi driver should have focused on the dog as his reason for refusing to take them, not the smelly "people"LOL

True, and I agree. But who would honestly want to take someone that looks extremely intoxicated and could possibly vomit? I think to an extent taxi drivers have a right to choose who they should be allowed to take. I don't think it's clear who they can reject and who they cannot.

true; no one wants to take overly drunk people in their taxi; better to have them driving themselves.LOL

he could have also said he refused to take them because he didn't want to miss the end of "infinite challenge" on his small tv. it's even possible that the people DID smell badly. but when he noticed they were foreigners he should have known better than to use that excuse. it's like a NYC taxi driver refusing to take arabs because he was afraid they would hijack his taxi with box cutters.LOL you just know it's going to result in a fine and make the papers.

Hahaha, yeah that wouldn't be so good either.

Yeah, well it's up to the taxi drivers to make their best judgement and present their case. He totally should have focused on the dog either way.

No comment on the "smelly foreigners", but crossing the street to get the proper taxi is a long established arrangement in Korea and poses no undue hardship. Unlike Koreans, I haven't always been aware of which taxi stand is for which destinations, but if I knew I would go where I was supposed to in the first place.

I've never had this problem except late at night, when a taxi driver might have had plans to finish their shift and go home. So the taxi driver explains about the taxi stop and I cross the street. It's easier for me to cross the street than it is for the taxi driver be be a long way from home.
