Hi All,
My brother has a Toshiba laptop. It is 2 years old and pretty much since its purchase, it has randomly shutdown (probably should have been taken back but the problem didn't really surface till I was in Korea with the laptop).
It does it whenever it feels like it. It does it will someone is doing homework, or on the internet, or while downloading things. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for these shutdowns. It will be on one minute and off the next.
I can give more detail if needed. Just help a girl and her brother out!

Is it overheating? I had that same mystery problem until someone much more computer savvy than me clued me into the fact that laptops automatically turn off when they get too hot. If you don't have one, I'd try getting a good cooler pad. |

Is there any kind of warning message?
I've noticed that on Windows XP installs on laptops especially, you run into problems with some of the software settings initiating a shutdown after finding programming errors (and errors happen more common than you think, the computer usually just ignores them) |

all computers do... i'm not that clued up on laptops but my desktop was doing the same thing a few years ago.. nothing wrong with anything i could see so i pulled cards and and pushed them.. 1 day (i already had the case open) i had a look through it when it was running and the cpu cooling fan wasn't spinning...
i bought a new fan for 9 bucks and the thing ran perfectly..
maybe take it on a return trip (not a round trip because you drive in the straightest line possible, and not a circle) to a pc shop and ask them to check if it is overheating.
don't just give it to them to fix, ask them to look for a specific problem..
oneiros could be on the right track with the cooler pad.. try the cheapest, easiest things first... |

It could be a virus or worm. |

I would say heat or power or maybe even a short. New products come with a warranty for a reason...they don't all work out of the box.
Either way you will need to get it serviced. |

Hi All,
Thanks for the answers. I had no clue there was a thing such as a cooler pad for laptops. I will definitely give that a try first. The computer never gave any error messages before shutting down so overheating sounds like a good possibility. To my knowledge, there is no virus on this computer. I've found some before but they have been dispatched into the hell all viruses go.
The best idea is to take a return trip (see Wylde, I can be agreeable ) to the store. My brother and I are trying to figure that one out. The laptop is still under warranty but we are on a quest to find the original receipt.
But for now, I'll try to buy a cooler pad and see if that works out.
Thanks,
AlyAllen |
