I do need to know if this is just an idle threat or will it happen for real.

Plan on it happening. Extra trains and buses are being prepped.

It may be resolved at the last minute but......

sk.

Taxi fare rise in 2009

General rise in prices from 2006

I hate to say it but with inflation, they would just about break even. As loathe as I am to pay more (because this in and of itself contributes to inflation), they'll probably get it.

or it could backfire and all those people forced to take the bus and train might realize that it's not that bad and so much cheaper.

As passengers I say we go on strike until they agree to stop blocking corners, bus stops, and rolling their eyes when you only need to go a short distance.

A taxi drivers strike will improve city traffic immensely.

I really think taxis should be expensive, it's cheaper for 3 people to catch a taxi than it is to use a bus or the subway, yet taxis cause a lot more congestion.

Raise the fares I say.

That's great news! The roads will actually be somewhat safer to drive on tomorrow!

I would bet that the other 2/3rds (roughly) of the drivers will be out taking advantage of the lack of supply, probably gouging customers for off the meter fares.

Frankly, I hope they do go on strike.,..and stay there~

So based on the article, the taxi drivers want all of the monetary benefits...but none of the government oversight that other "public" transportation units are subjected to?

When taxis have cctv cameras in their car..video that is fed directly to a central office to prevent/catch them robbing/assaulting/overcharging customers..when they are screened for past criminal records and not allowed to drive otherwise, when their cars become subject to GPS tracking to monitor speed, time, activity...then i can get on board with fare hikes.

Until then...they basically come off as middle aged folks who used to be crooks, and now trying to squeak out as much as they can. Strike away boys...do us all a favor~

Why stop with taxi drivers? Let's do that with other government employees- Police, bureaucrats, teachers...oh wait...

Like I mentioned in another thread the other day - I'm all for a taxi fare increase if it means the government will do more to regulate them in terms of safety standards for both in-car passengers as well as other cars on the road. Do the same with the buses - They're maniacs.

I must be so lazy with my 2 min. drive to and from school but it helps to have a car. Still, with 2 short trips per month and driving on school days, I refill my tank once every month.

Doesn't take much to get a driver's license. Just find a driving school near you. They're all around.

You'll get acclamated to the driving culture over here pretty quickly if you already know how to drive.

Give them all their demands, but keep the buses/subway open two hours later. See how that works out for them.
