How good is your korean? I suspect the average Korean is extremely narrow minded though we just can't understand most of the stupid stuff they say.
When I eventually get good at korean I think I'll really miss the blissful ignorance of not being able to comprehend what the average fool is saying. |

Korian made a good comment about the intollerance of people at "home" which is quite characteristic of people where I come from, Canada, as well. Canada has never been perfect, nor has any other place in the world when it comes to accepting everyone that is different from every faucet of society, however, in my opinion, things have goten a lot worse over the last several years. With the political structure constantly getting more Rightist and anti-American, since 9-11, I can hardly stand the extremely rah rah nationalism that has grown so distinct since I left there. Even most Canadians don't know how ignorant they are. The fact is that most people have no realistic concept, let alone knowledge, of their history so most just follow any popular cultural/national/political paradigms that whimisically come along over time. I really wish Canada would grow it's own nationalism (in the sense of identity), so that it may stop making reverse-insinuations about what makes up the fibre of a Canadian.
I just can't identify with this strong anti-Americanism/"anti-anything that isn't Canadian" spirit that has grown so quickly and strongly. It is intillerance that smacks of racism, something that Canadians claim imperveousness to since it is a multi-cultural nation.
By the way, this is not meant to start the whole US-Canadian thing here. Please go to another thread if you would like to start something up, lets stay on topic with "reverse culture shock". |

You can tell how narrow -minded people are by things other than language, such as their general behavior and mannerisms. Communication is 93% body language. |

...and 80% of statistics are made up on the spot, I think second guessing what peoples attitudes are when you don't know what they're saying is a dangerous game. |

I've got to disagree with the "communication is 90+ % body language" statement there rapier.
If you have a conversation with someone you depend almost entirely on understanding the meaning of the words. The body language helps of course, but if you don't understand the words you cannot really understand the message. Most of the time you need to know the words to get the full message. Without the words you do not get 90% of the message. You are just confused! Just like us "low-level Korean language" foreign people and just like our low-level students of English! You may communicate at a basic level with someone when the language barrier is big. That means you can communicate some things, but there are so many more things you cannot communicate because of language barrier.
Sadly, the language barrier leads to our not understanding others and causes mistrusts and conflicts. Anyway guess this idea has been covered before. |

I have to ask. Why are you learning the language then? |

But I think Rapier is quoting Cosmo Kramer, and how could he be wrong? |

This may or may not be a quote from George Bernard Shaw: "There are two kinds of people in the world; those who divide the world into two kinds of people, and those who don't." Goodnight, and have a pleasant tomorrow. My work here is done. |
