Why drink awful beer when you can make your own? The Magpie Brewing Company will be holding an introductory home brewing class in Seoul. Hit the link for details.

damn that is pretty cool.

But...50,000 won. That is pretty steep.

Maybe it is worth it. Save money over the long haul?

Hey there Thomas--

It's a 3 hour class, complete with lunch AND a beer tasting. As it says in the post, you can learn brewing on your own, but we like the fact that we provide plenty of specific tips on doing it in Korea, and are very quick to answer any questions you have.

We also find that it creates an "instant community" for the people who take the class. I've been doing the class for 2 years now and have found that lots of people stick with it and start brewing with confidence!

I went to the last one, and while I did enjoy it and think I learned enough to make a batch of beer myself, I was a little disappointed that we couldn't make beer ourselves in the class.

I know your facility isn't big enough for that, but other classes I've been to of this type (like baking classes) are hands-on, so I was expecting the beer class to be.

This is not to say it wasn't worth going to; again, I'm glad I did because I learned a lot (the beer and food was good too).

I have no vested interest in this, but where would you plan on letting it ferment? Would you bring it home with you, or have them hold it there while it ferments? I just don't see how it would be possible for any brewing class to have you do a brew on the spot, unless they were planning on having you back a second time for bottling and keeping your stuff there until then.

Sure; I think I mentioned it in class but doing the full brew would take a 3 hour session and turn it into a 4 hour session. Not only that, but I found that a lot of people simply weren't interested in picking their beers up after the class when I've done this in the past. So it's not about the facilities not being big enough, per-se (although that can be an issue from time to time). It's just more of a time and practicality consideration.

So, that's why we came up with the Magpie Brewing Kit that you can get from Beer School after the class (we do not get money for that!). It's the best compromise for getting students started without the pressure of having "return classes" where people just learn to bottle.

Just a reminder: there are only 3 spots left for the class (probably the last we will do for the summer). Hit the link to sign up!
