Hello everyone, I'm semi-new to the forum (have been browsing for about 6 months) and this is my first post. I tried searching for the answer before posting but couldn't find it. This is a really general question and is based purely off of curiosity.

I was just wondering how long the average ESL teacher in Korea spends teaching. Does the average teacher last just for one 1-year contract and move on or is it a few years? How long have you been in Korea teaching ESL and how long do you plan to be there for?

I'm currently working with a few recruiters to teach in Korea but I wouldn't start until early next year. I imagine to myself two scenarios, 1: I love teaching in Korea and stay there for several years or possibly end up staying, or 2: The experience is OK but after a year I'm ready to go home and get on with my life.

Two years seems to be the average, but that's absolutely anecdotal.

8 years for me, not including a 2+ year hiatus for grad school and travel. I'd say the "average" English teacher stays here as long as he wants to. You'll never know how long that is until you get here.

The two POEs that I work for have an average annual turnover of about 55% so I guess that would translate to about 1/2 stay on for more than 1 year but most (90%) are gone after 3.

.
