I have a BA in English. I've been teaching in Korea for over 3 years. First year at a hagwon, the rest at a public elementary with SMOE. I'm going home in August to complete a MAT program in Secondary Education. When it's finished I'll be a licensed high school English subject teacher.

My plan is to return to Korea and try to get a job at an international school.

- I know that international schools are uber competitive.

- I know that, in Korea, most of the real international schools are Christian and only hire Christian teachers. (I'm a proud agnostic)

- The few schools that aren't Christian seem to only hire teachers with multiple years of experience (in their home countries) or teachers with IB experience.

AND SO... it seems I'll have trouble finding an international school position in Korea.

I really don't want to end up working for another hagwon/public school again after spending a year and a half + tons of cash for the MA and teacher certification.

Questions:

1. Will my BA in English + MAT + EFL experience (albeit with children) be enough to land a Uni job if I can't get into an international school right away?

2. Any ideas on how I could increase my chances of getting an international school job? Uni job?

* I know I could get an int. school job in China without much trouble, but my wife is Korean, has a career in Korea, and wants to stay in/near Seoul.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Smile

With your completed credentials is there any particular reason why you want to return to Korea (K-wife or other factor)?

Remuneration packages in the proper international schools all across Asia are competitive and in many cases, 2nd tier international schools are decent, have OK packages and much less competition.

I was wondering which countries are good to look at? I too will be a licensed teacher at the primary level this year and taught in Korea. I have absolutely no interest in returning to Korea but was thinking of going internationally to Hong Kong or another country which has better benefits and pay. Obviously I will have my B.ED. and begin to start looking soon. I heard Hong Kong was quite difficult to break into.

B.Ed, MA/M.Ed/home country certification then NET in HK, regular schools in Taiwan or decent international schools all over Asia.

HK is not hard to get into if you have the qualifications nor it Taiwan and starting salaries of US$3000 + air, housing, and other benefits are the norm.

It is possible over time to get into schools with remuneration packages of US$60k and some of the top schools (highly competitive) in the region pay upwards of US$100k.

I am, indeed, married to a Korean. I might be able to convince her to live in Japan, Hong Kong, or Singapore for a few years, but most likely I'll be stuck in Korea.

Eventually we will return to the U.S. --which is why I chose the MAT over a MA TESOL/Linguistics. EFL is fine for now, but not something I want to do long-term.

Assuming I'm unable to find an int. school position in Korea...

Would a Uni in/near Seoul consider me even though my MA will be in Secondary Edu. and not TESOL or Linguistics? Really don't want to get CELTA if I don't have to.

They might consider you now since you're completing your degree and, most importantly, you're on an F2/F5 visa.
