I have some of those boxes from Emart that you can use to bring your purchases home, but I'm wondering if I can use them to send stuff back to the US.
Can I do that, or do I have to buy the #5 box from the Post Office?

You can use them but be aware that there is a size limit on boxes that you can send through the post that are going overseas to the USA.

Basically, wrap a tape measure around the box and add the length.
As long as it is less than 200cm you are OK.

The boxes at the Korean post office are usually cheaper to mail because they charge a flat rate.

No they are not.

The postage fees are determined by destination zone, type of service and weight.
zones: http://www.koreapost.go.kr/eng/sub/subpage.jsp?contId=e1010601

Weight, class (air parcel, surface, SAL) and price:
http://www.koreapost.go.kr/eng/sub/subpage.jsp?contId=e1010605

ie:
surface mail, 20kg to USA = 63k won.
air parcel, 20kg to USA = 198,300
SAL parcel, 20kg = 160k won

I love that it's cheaper for me to mail a 15kg box from Seoul to Canada cheaper than it is to mail the same box within the same province there.
I sent about 10 boxes of various sizes and weights to Canada in 2010. I sent them in June a few weeks before I left and they were delivered to my door by the mail carriers in late August. They almost pooped when I told them how much each box cost in Canadian dollars.
I think in 2010, the 20kg box was 55,000.

Just send the stuff surface and don't bother getting a freight handler involved. Freight handling will ultimately include you in taxation, customs inspections, etc, etc. Mail is so much more straight forward. Just print clearly and don't ship stuff your not supposed to. In other words, don't wreck this good thing for the rest of us please.

Happy shipping!

Thanks for the advice. I sent home two boxes yesterday, turns out they were smaller than the #5 box. One was 6 kilo, the other was 8. cost just over 50,000. Not too bad.
