Hi,

I'm new to ESL in Korea.

Should i submit an application for a criminal background check to FBI before or after i start looking for a teaching job in korea?

Ive heard that working with recruiters can help make this process easier since they sometimes help guide you through the visa process, including how to get that criminal background check. Should I just try to work with a recruiters first then?

Oh, and is it true livescan fingerprints wont work since the check cannot be apostilled?

Go to your local police station. They should be able to do it. If the ESL industry is similar to what I knew in the 90s (okay, I'm somewhat old), you can have a job in no time (can't say that means it'll be good or bad).

If you know for certain you want to go to Korea, go ahead and get that CBC done now. From what I've read, it's good for 6 months.

Like Philthor said, the CRC is good for 6 months, so keep this in mind. It also take about 2 to 3 months to get it done depending on a few factors and where you live.

Make sure to get good fingerprints, include a note for them to notarize it, and do not send your CRC to be apostilled by USPS. It will take even longer because it will need to be quarantined (up to 5 weeks). I used UPS and it got there within a few days. It then takes a couple weeks for them to send it back. Include an express envelope in the package if you want it back faster.

In the US, the current wait time is 8 weeks for the background check to come in from the FBI, and 10 business days for the apostille process at the Dept of State. (plus postal time)
