Does anyone know the process your documents go through after being sent to the hiring school? How long does this process take before you get your visa?
I am asking because my flight date is supposed to July 27th and my background check has yet to come in. Apparently, it was sent back to my on June 24th, but here it is July 5th and I have yet to receive it. I have learned that I can get a quick Apostille if I make the 7 hr drive to DC to get it. My recruiter is on my ass about it...as if I could make the FBI work faster. They have all of my other paperwork...just waiting on this damn background check/apostille.
I'm afraid I am going to end up losing the job because of this.

Also, does anyone know the reason for the FBI background check instead of the local or state ones that were allowed before? This was so much easier when I left for Korea in 09.

They went with the National check because people who had criminal records, where getting out of state checks. Have theft charge in Oregon, get a California check.

Korean government now asks for the national to close the loophole.

Sent them to the recruiter.
The recruiter sends them to the school.
The school fills in the visa confirmation application and takes it to immigration.
4-10 working days for processing at immigration.
Immigration send the number back to the school.
The school sends the number back to the recruiter.
The recruiter sends the number to you.
You apply for a visa (takes 2-4 working days if done in person and up to a week by mail).
You get your visa in your passport, book your ticket and get on a plane.

The process is typically 12-21 calendar days from start to finish.
That is why you don't buy your ticket until you actually have a visa in hand.

You won't have a visa and fly on the 27th if you don't have the visa already.

I don't have my ticket yet. The 27th is when the school wants to fly me out. Thanks for the time info, though.

The chances are that you will get the FBI CBC in time, although it usually takes 3 to 5 days for letters from USPS. You'll have to buy a bus ticket or plane ticket to Washington and have your apostille done on the same day. I hope that you have a diploma copy that has been apostilled, you will have to have that for immigration also. For important documents please use FEDEX or DHL next time.

As I said in the OP, all of my other documents have been sent, including the diploma and Apostille. I had that done in 3 days. I already plan on driving to DC to get the Apostille done quickly. I just hate waiting for this damn paper to get here.

When did you submit the CBC application to the FBI? Often, asking for help from your representative in the House or Senate (or both) can make a difference. Senator Cardin's office helped reduce my CBC processing time to under 3 weeks.

I finally got someone at the FBI to help me. We believe the papers were lost in the mail, but I was able to get another copy. It's going to be sent overnight, so hopefully I will have it in a couple of days.
