Hello All,

If one is stopped at a BAC checkpoint, fails the initial test, is asked to get out of the car, blows into another machine, and is given back their keys and license and told to drive home, but their information has been recorded in a little log book, what does this mean? Are things ok, or should they expect something in the mail?

Thanks

I knew someone who lost their license at one of those check points. You're doing OK.

That's a relief to hear. I knew I was ok, I know the legal limit, and I know my limits, but was worried about that logbook. But it seemed weird for them to tell me to drive home if things on my end were illegal~

Just like in any other western country, if you were above the limit they would have done something right then and there. In the US you would have been arrested.

When you are in your car , the first machine you blow into
only registers if there is any amount of alcohol in your system.

The second machine tells exactly how much your (bac ) blood alcohol
content is .

So , you probably had been drinking , but you weren't over the legal limit .
The legal limit in Korea is 0.05 / bac.

Yes , I lost my licence for 50 days , and had to go to classes .
I had to pay a fine of 700,000 won .
I had a bac of 0.07 .

The cops actually gave me time until they were finished .
They gave me a huge two-liter of water , and said to drink it .
They told me if it went down to 0.05 , they'd let me go .

Well it only went down to 0.06.

You best believe . I'll never drive after drinking again .
That was 6 years ago .
I always call those guys 대리운전 .
They drive me right home for a manner (10,000 won .

I know someone that blew over the limit by a lot (not sure about the exact number). It must have been a lot because his license was suspended for a year, he had to pay a couple million in fines, and also attend a class on DUIs all day on a Saturday.

When he went to go renew his visa (F-4), they said that because of his past DUI, they were going to review his status. He had to interview with an investigator who said that if you pay a fine for an offence and it's over a certain amount, then you can have your visa banned for 1 year (essentially have to leave the country).

He gave him a pass but only renewed the visa for one year (normally for an F-4 it's 3). Said that if he ever got in trouble again, then he's gone.

Lesson: always get a 대리. It's annoying waiting for them and some (including myself) don't like others driving their cars but drinking and driving is just plain stupid and you could get booted.

Thanks for sharing. They took away your license right away, right?

Actually , no they didn't . I think I had 2-3 weeks before I was
prohibited from driving.
If I didn't agree to attend the classes it would have been 100 days .
They never took my physical license , everything was just through their
computers .
I paid the fine to the court .
Then I had to have the license reinstated at a police station .
I have had police record checks done for schools , after that .
Nothing showed up .

Weird....So they let you drive home drunk? Guess I'll have to wait a few weeks to find out, then.

My friend got pinched at one of the checkpoints. He was wasted apparently. They put him in the paddywagon bus for a couple of hours and then just handed him his keys and sent him on his way. Luuuuucky
