|

So... I'm planning to come to Korea in September, and I was wondering if there is something akin to TIVO or DVR in Korea? I've gotten really used to being able to record and watch shows when I want, and well... is there something like that in Korea? |

Look for something called a Slingbox.
Record from a home TV and watch on any computer. |

I've heard of sling box before... thing is, I'm leaving and cancelling my cable subscription..., I won't have a 'home' to record from when I get to Korea. Can I use sling box if I don't have a cable account? |

Heh, I know how to torrent, that's not a problem, but I was wondering if there was a way to DVR shows from Korean Cable? I've checked, and most of what I would want to watch is on AFN, so if I could DVR it from there, that would be easier... if it's not possible, then I guess torrenting it is. |

With how fast Korean Internet is, it's almost less work to just torrent whatever you want. I've downloaded 2 gig movie files in five minutes. |

C and m cable (http://www.cnm.co.kr/) offer a pvr ( personal video recorder ) with one of their packages. It allows you to pause, and rewind the tv plus select programs to record and watch later. However, Im pretty sure afn is not available on their system
They will deal with foreigners but you will have to put a 50,000 won deposit on the equipment they give you. It will cost you about 35,000 per month for a cable and Internet package.
They have an English speaking phone number but if they don't answer the first time then then try again as the English speaking staff are not always there

Torrents are going to be your best bet.
Some of the movie channels here run foreign TV series but can be a season or two behind due to having to subtitle everything.
There are websites that show live sports directly if that's what you are worried about.
Otherwise, you can see if a family member will let you set up a Slingbox on their system. |

Torrents are awesome for keeping up with tv back home. The slingbox is also great. Beauty of torrents is they are free, but the negative is you have to search a little more.
The slingbox is live (think of it as akin to having your local cable box in your new home in Korea), and you get to follow the somewhat normal tv viewing style of just randomly checking out channels, but a couple of negatives are you need someone willing to host your box, and the host needs to have a strong upload speed.
I have seen some places which offer to rent slingbox access; however, I have yet to see any places renting access that appear to be legit businesses.
In prep for my own move back to Korea, I've gotten a slingbox, and, luckily, I have a relative willing to host the machine for me. To avoid any conflicts, I set up a DVR dedicated to just the slingbox. Setting up the box was easy, and on my net here in America (cable internet but only 10 meg download max which is significantly below Korean speeds) on a wireless G router, the picture has been outstanding.
My laptop has an hdmi port, and when I connect it to the tv, it looks fantastic; however, it does appear to be slightly (ever so slightly) darker than what I'm used to.
If you want to be legal about it, avoid torrents, but that's an ethical question. I plan on using my slingbox for my tv, but I'll probably use torrents for some films. However, I know that for my slingbox, at least, I can't get in trouble.
After originally posting this, I found that Belkin is introducing an alternative to the slingbox. Might be a nice option: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089L4TL8/ref=asc_df_B0089L4TL82095353?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B0089L4TL8&hvpos=1o1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=545872068173548442&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt= |

It's not what you asked about, but I find this useful at times.
