For those of you who live in Jeollanamdo Gwangju, there is a a small Costco store in Suwan-dong. It is across from the Suwan middle school(수완중학교). Here is the link in Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=35.186103,126.827846&hl=en&num=1&vpsrc=0&doflg=ptk&t=m&z=16&start=0
It's been open for about a week. The place is small, but it did have some stuff from the Daejeon Costco. Things like Tefal pots and pans, Henckel's knives, down comforters, storage shelves, Kirkland laundry detergent, Downey softener. Also some canned foods, pickles, snacks, chocolates, juices etc.
There is a small markup, about 10-20%, over the prices I remembered from Daejeon. Hope this helps.
Edit: Here is a pic of the store

Looks good. Anyone know if these are in cities around Korea? Do you need your membership card or is the markup covering that? Ideally it would be better just to show your card and get a cheaper price. I don't live in Gwangju but knew some people that did before. I believe in the old downtown there was a foriegner food mart called "The Underground Grocer" but some of their prices were quite high. Haven't been down there in ages. So not sure about now. |

They didn't ask me for my membership card. Even though there is a markup, it sure beats making a 4 hour round trip and 60k in gas money. They don't have a big selection yet, but for small purchases it's nice to have it here. I hope they stay in business for a long time. |

Is it an actual Costco or just one of those Costco resellers? The location isn't listed on Costco's Korean web site, they don't require a membership card, and there is a markup? It sounds like they're just using Costco's logo and name without permission. Does that really matter, though? Probably not to the consumer. |

I was thinking the same thing. They are probably just using the name. Doesn't matter to me though. The markup is reasonable and it is much more convenient. My wife spoke to the owner and she said they want to add more items in the future. |
