I've lost two monitors to lightning in the last month.

First time, a month ago, my blame. I just had my desktop plugged into the wall socket. The lightning burst also fried the power supply & whatever it is connects to the net. Computer know-nothing, here.

The monitor was a write-off so I got a cheap 2nd-hand one, got the necessary repairs to my box, bought what I thought was a power surge bar, & was back in business.

Lightning hit again this afternoon as I was using it. Monitor went skzzzxk & pop. Dead. The power bar did nothing, staying happily on.

So my question. This power bar definitely claimed something about surge protection in its name (I've thrown away the box) but it was cheap, maybe 12000 won. What do I actually need for a bit of protection in an apparently lightning-prone house?

If you really want something to protect your computer or other electronic appliances from electrical discharge, get one of these. It's bit costly but nothing like having a good insurance to keep your things safe.

Thanks, thats probably the right answer.

But for less than half the cost I just went out & bought another used monitor. I'll unplug it when I'm not at home if theres lightning in the forecast.

Maybe I should talk to my landlord about a lightning rod.

External power supply is also good for blackouts because it has power enough to keep your electronics on to turn them off safely.
