Has anyone here heard about changes being made to the healthcare system?

My language partner is a doctor, and according to her, the government is rolling out a series of changes in patient contributions. Eventually (over the next ten years), the government is planning to move to a totally privatized system, modeled on that of the US. Korean doctors and hospitals are NOT HAPPY.

Like most unpopular governmental decisions, this one has not been mentioned in mainstream media, which might be why most folks have not heard about it, but I was wondering, have any of you? Do you know anyone who works in a hospital or clinic who can verify this? Can you find any links to news stories on it?

According to my language partner, the first change came July first, with a significant increase in patient contributions for routine surgeries: c-sections, tonsillectomies, and appendectomies.

Interesting, isn't it? I wonder if the horror story posted a few days ago had anything to do with this.

The story that I have heard / read is that the govt. is mandating standardised charges for routine procedures ( tonsilectomy, appendicitus etc) which will reduce the costs to the patient by 15-20%.

The hospitals and doctors are not happy with this possible reduction in their income and the loss of the ability to charge what they want so are threatening strikes and other measures to try and prevent the implementation.

( no links - just hearsay and some articles I have seen)

This.

It's been in the papers

The procedures are all procedures that can be done even if they aren't necessary. In Korea, an abnormally large number of women have C-sections. Why? Because the doctors make more money on it. By reducing what they pay, the government is hoping to improve healthcare by forcing the doctors to do the procedures only when necessary.

My Korean friend told me it's because many woman here have smaller hips which can result in injury or complication when giving birth vaginally.

Thanks for the articles~ So, they're just making them have a flat rate so that doctors prescribe the necessary treatment rather than going overboard in order to get more money? Sounds like it'll be good for everyone except the doctors.
