Hey, does the ktx go straight to the airport or what's the best way to get there. I'll be leaving from Ulsan if that matters. Thank you.

KTX will get you as far as Seoul Station, then from there you can transfer to the Airport Railroad which will take you to ICN.

Yep. It's 2 hours and 20 mins from Ulsan station to Seoul Station. However, it's like 20 minutes or more (much more by bus) from most places to Ulsan Station out in Eonyang. It's also another 35 minutes from Seoul Station to ICN. Plus the travel and waiting time for all of these things.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from the bus terminal next to Lotte department store that goes directly from downtown Ulsan to ICN airport. If I recall, it's around 25K won and takes about five hours.

Or alternatively, if you're flying with Korean Air or Asiana, you could fly from Ulsan Airport to Gimpo then take the AREX to ICN. Then you can avoid the hassle of having to lug your bags all the way to ICN. Check in, get your boarding pass(es) and check your bags through to your final destination.

Although actually you can check in for your flight at Seoul Station for Asiana/Korean and you can even do outbound immigration there so not much of an advantage there.

definitely don't take the subway from Seoul Station which is what the local train is - too long and slow and you'll be lugging your bags, etc.

take one of the buses, they are all good. if there's a direct bus from Ulsan to the airport, as someone suggested, that's your best bet. you want the fewer transfers the better. the KTX only has overheads so if you have large bags, well, it might be a bit difficult. and you'll have to keep an eye on them as well, people do steal stuff.

Question

This isn't really accurate. AREX is the fastest option available.

Quote:
Both express and commuter services are operated. With the opening of the first phase, journeys from Incheon International Airport to Gimpo International Airport took 28 on express services and 33 minutes on commuter services. Following the opening of the second phase, SeoulIncheon International Airport travel time on half-hourly express services is 43 minutes; while commuter services, which run at a frequency of up to one train every 6 minutes, take 53 minutes.[9] This competes against a theoretical travel time of 70 minutes on buses, 60 minutes on taxis, and 60 minutes with private car.[9] It should be noted, however, that in practice travel by bus or car is faster than using the train.[why?][citation needed] Airline passengers can check in at a western annex of Seoul Station.[15]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AREX

Emphasis on the why in the Wiki, as I've found the train to be a lot faster (and more consistent). I suppose it depends on when you're traveling though.

and what about lugging one's bags? a bus will take you right to the door, you get off, get a cart and load your bags.

and you even highlighted the part that says it's faster to take the bus so what's your point? Shocked

I'm wondering if you wrote it, because it's really not accurate, in my experience (as I posted). In any case, you clearly haven't taken AREX if you're complaining about lugging bags, considering its easier to get to AREX at Seoul Station and the train delivers you straight into the airport at Incheon, where there are - shocker - carts.

you're absolutely right - I haven't taken it - I always use the airport buses because they have storage capacity for luggage and I don't have to drag anything downstairs or haul it upstairs like I would to get on a train -

do these trains have special holding areas for luggage like buses? or is it overhead as I mentioned before?

They have a luggage storage area on each car, as does the KTX.

It's really not that difficult getting things up and down the stairs since the AREX has so many escalators.

The buses are great for getting directly to the airport, but if I'm near Seoul Stn. I would recommend the train. It's fast and reliable. I've had a close call or two with the buses taking longer than expected due to accidents, traffic, weather, etc. No worries with the train. Smile

They aren't normal subway cars, genius; ridership is much lower and you put your bags on the floor. It's shocking that they would consider such things when making a train line to the airport. This isn't the first time you've gone on about something you're clueless about (NPS at the airport, Austin, etc.), I'm sure it won't be the last.

I took one of those airport buses on one of my last trips. It was 20 000W and from where I left it took 3 hours. It was confortable, clean, and dropped me off right at the departures area in ICN.

From Ulsan I would say that this is the best option as far as simplicity & cost is concerned.

From cities and towns, take the airport limousine bus. May take a little longer, but so much easier.

Take taxi to bus stop. Wait for bus. Put luggage underneath. Get on, and relax and sleep. If the trip is long, the bus will stop at the highway rest stop for about 20 or 30 min. Stretch legs, get a bathroom break or go back to sleep.

If you choose the bus, consider buying your ticket ahead of time. Less stress and sometimes the bus sells out.

Good Luck.

case in point: I take a taxi from my home, put bags in taxi. taxi stops at airpoirt bus stop. I take bags out of taxi, move 3 feet over to stop. wait for bus.

why on earth would anyone - except a glutton for punishment - want to get off at Seoul Stn and lug bags for hundreds of feet up and down escalators, thru walkways and a terminal??

it's called wasted motion, a new concept for you, I imagine. I can relax on the bus listening to music and reading while you are huffing and puffing. go ahead. I really could care less. Wink
