Hi All,
Not to add to the many negative things posted, but I just can't let this one pass. On Saturday, a very nice old man came to our apartment to talk to us about noise in the building, it isn't us by the way. So he just wants to know if we hear it too. His neighbors are directly above him and we are two under them. And we do hear them, and it is quite pronounced but we have gotten used to it. Well, it's obviously very bad for him. He has lived here six years without incident. So he brings them fruit and does the whole Korean thing and politely asks them if they could keep it down at night. The 40 year old ajumma proceeded to punch him hard in his chest and push him away. She does this in front of her husband and two daughters. The cowardly husband didn't do anything. The poor guy was talking to my wife for about a half an hour. He was very upset, so he went to the security guards, building management, and even the police. Nobody cared enough to help him.
I thought Koreans respected the elderly. |

that's very sad.
you know bullies don't respect anyone.
so are you and your wife gonna help the old man out ? i.e, support his complaint and try to get them to quiet down? |

We already complained long before he did. They just listen and then do nothing. Like I said, nobody cares..
The old man also told us that since the incident, it has gotten worse, the noise that is... |

These sound like low class people. Think the old man has some class. But, in Korea, you have to friek out and get emotional. Cry, scream, yell, ect to get results. I'm really surprised about the police though. I always assumed that older Korean men could say someone hit them and they have to get paid blood money or is that only with foriegners? I think you have to call the police at night and scream and yell in the phone and they might come by to speak to the people just to shut you up.
Too bad you couldn't go up there and punch her in the face. Since she doesn't seem to act like a lady she must not be one! |

If you're hearing noise all the time, call the landlord, security gaurd, police non stop. Be a real pain the you know what. Eventually, they'll either be made to shut up or you'll have to move out. |

Weigookin,
We are moving out, our 2 year contract expires in late Feb. Like I said, it doesn't bother us that much anymore. It's the old man that has the troubles.. |

Don't lose sleep over this. Keep to yourself and look the other way. Being a good samaritan is over rated. Unless you're Korean, and a power wielding one at that, involvement with these kinds of situations is always risky. |

they are low class people, and you can't talk to idiots.
maybe if they are renting, you could complain to the owners of the house and tell them to tell the tenants to keep it down,
I doubt the police will do anything if they are not breaking the law. |

Boxer,
I didn't say I wasn't going to do something to help him. I just wonder where his family is, why won't somebody step in to defend him. I was saying that the noise doesn't bother us that much, not the abuse. It really affects him much more than us. That's what I meant. But hey, thanks for pointing that out. The guy who mentioned knowing someone with some pull is exactly right, I know a police officer, but he is a newbie and they won't listen to him. So now you know one thing I've tried to no avail. But thanks for twisting my words without all the facts, which I haven't given... |

Its not who is the oldest, its who has the most money.
Somehow she has sensed that he is of low status, no consequence, or-gasp- poor, and thus can be treated badly without fear of retribution.
Koreans have a radar highly attuned to sensing where they can take advantage of others. |

Even if it's futile, they will still make a good attempt to land some good kicks. |

Wow, Emark, what a terrific bolt of common sense. So stylish, trendy, and adapted to local culture. We'll all remember your advice next time you get hit by a motorcycle and are lying on the road. |

Ah, this probably has nothing to do with this, but I remember something I heard once when I was living in the dorms way back when.
I remember someone saying that if there were a particularly annoying or abusive person who just wouldn't take a hint, people would make a 'tipper' for them.
I remember someone saying that a 'tipper' was a large garbage can filled with water stewed with garbage and partially rotted food. If I recall, I think they said that they'd then lean this precariously against said terrible person's door, knock loudly, then run off at light speed. When the verbally and physically abusive person would open the door...well, you get the picture...whoooooosh!
Seems to my recollection that that humbled many an abusive offender.
But, like I said, not really applicable here. |
