OK, so I don't have a problem carrying my weight in a classroom cleaning it if it needs be, etc...
I just need to get your take on this.
this conversational Korean teach (not a real teacher, she's got some unrelated cert.) walks in and looks at the classroom floor and told me that the floor is really dirty...!?!?!
She proceeds to make remarks pointing at why i should clean it, since it's MY classroom...
What would you have done? What are cleaners at the schools for anyways..? |

Hand her the mop.. or show/tell her where it is.
In public schools the kids clean the classrooms.
In hagwans... pay me at the overtime rate and I will mop... otherwise hire a cleaner to mop it.
If it just needsa quick broom ... then get it done. no big deal.

I do clean. No hassle there. The issue is someone telling me to do it when I am busy with something else and also making it sound like i am some kinda wasteful dirt-bag. she pulls her face like she just saw a garbage dump in my classroom. |

Do you take orders from her? If not then tell her she is talking to the wrong person. If you want to do it semi-nice then, "Yes it is dirty. I teach, I don't clean. What do you do?" |

Usually, there is one person who overlooks things on a regular basis, the manager or co-teacher. If this is the same person, then I wouldn't worry about it and be glad they aren't complaining about your teaching.
If this is some random person who you don't talk with in regards to payment, scheduling, or the curriculum then do whatever you want (within reason) to make them feel uncomfortable.
One guy kept coming up to me asking me if I "have any classes". Either he was completely out of it and thought I might just show up on a day I don't work or he was referring to that exact moment, so one day I finally questioned him on it.
Me: Do you mean do I teach now?
Him: Yea
Me: Look at the schedule (this was a public school of 2,400 students, so everyone took a break at the same time, teachers included).
Me: Why would I be teaching now if it is break time for the whole school?
Him: Oh yea (turns around and walks away)
I never saw him again outside of his classroom |

You see, the problem with schools in the sticks are that people like this woman tend to throw their weight around since they think their parents know the principle and they ALL grew up together. So what's some foreigner to say to all their demands. Right?
Honestly, I feel like leaving the school and seeking other employ.
Too many bad bitter people here are connected and I feel that the best sometimes would be to cut my losses and look elsewhere... |

I'm a firm believer in a good, organized and clean learning environment for any and all students. It's up to you. Did she have a point? I don't know.
But if she is ask'n you to 'own' that room, the OWN it! Make it a representation of your native country or mom's living room.
Don't worry about the super, but worry about your students and make it a good atmosphere for your students as well as for yourself.
Personally, I don't shy away from sweep'n, mop'n or wipe'n the white board if it needs it. And I'm a strong, proud man. I do it for my students. 'Nuff said. |

What is the culture like in terms of cleaning at your school? I've been interning at Hyundai for the past few weeks and was shocked to find that they don't hire people to clean the offices. Instead the workers (extremely bright workers who earn between 40000k for base engineers and 150000k a year for 부장님) sweep, mop and wipe their entire department before starting work twice a week.
If your school is doing something similar, then I'd agree that you should be expected to clean your space. If not, then tell the teacher to back off. |

So bright people who earn a good salary are too good to clean sometimes?
Sorry had to do it. |

Did I imply that? I was just saying that if he's in a school where all the teachers clean their own rooms, just as all the workers at where I'm interning clean their own departments (I saw the CFO mopping his own office.), then he should be expected to do the same. I guess my salary example was to convey that even the upper management is expected to contribute to cleaning. |

A coworker can ask me to do almost anything... It's how they bring the message across as well as the normal situation being that there IS a cleaner to do her job... Which she's getting paid for... I can't expect the bus driver to teach my classes now, can I...?
I believe SOME ( these brackets are for those trolling around waiting to see what we will say next - only to jump on here and troll the Hell outta this thread ) people here are always charged up to launch some kinda attack to foreigners in this country... Mind games(i think), which I am most willing to anticipate in... |

At my school (rural elem) the cleaners clean the corredors, toilets and stairs but not the classrooms. Students clean that. Teachers are expected to do additional cleaning if the students' efforts weren't upto the scratch. |
