Korean bank workers decided Friday that they will stage a one-day strike late this month to protest a potential merger between the country's two large banking groups, an industry association said.

The government is seeking to privatize Woori Finance Holdings Co., Korea's top financial services company, in a bid to recoup the massive public fund injected into the company. Speculation has risen that No. 2 player KB Financial Group Inc. may move to merge with Woori Finance.

Following the recent breakup of collective bargaining, more than 90 percent of the unionized workers at local banks approved a motion to strike on July 30, the Korea Financial Industry Union (KFIU) said.

Would account holders not be able to access their accounts in the event of a strike?

That's screwed up.

I know there was talk for some time about Hana Financial buying KEB but that has gone no where (and Hana's stock is in the crapper).

I have an account with both KB and KEB. I may move some money to KEB just in case this happens. It's always not a bad idea to have two accounts.

hana did buy KEB. Hence why there are now signs on KEB ATMs saying "KEB ATM = Hana ATM". And there is no longer any fee to use either at either. As I use KEB and its the closest bank to my work and also another is the closest to my home I only use KEB machines, but I assume Hana ones are branded the same...I was seriously annoyed about that as HANA are awful! But they don't seem to have changed much about KEB...yet!
