China has told South Korea that it will not allow the unification of Korea under a democratic government. North Korea will remain under Chinese "influence." If worse comes to worse, China will send in troops to set up a North Korean government that will faithfully follow orders from China. In an effort to dampen some of the anger in South Korea (the United States, Japan and so on), China would maintain North Korea as a separate entity (and not a new province of China). China wants no misunderstanding about who "owns" North Korea.

That's nice. I think Hong Kong should be owned by the British and should be taken back. I think Macao should be owned by Portugal even though they might not want it back, in that case the U.S. can set it up as a dependancy.

A lot of people don't like the way things are being done in North Korea, the gulags, the mass starvings, the huge military to prop up one of the most pathetic regimes ever and the pursuit of nuclear weapons. And a lot of people don't particularly like China either.

I attended a lecture by Andrei Lankov who suggested that China would allow such a thing, provided that certain conditions were in place. I think I'm more inclined to believe him than your article.

Andrei Lankov is about one of three people whose judgment I'd trust on that issue. What were the conditions?

The biggie is that Korea isn't hostile to China. And to keep US troops south of the DMZ.

It's no secret that NK is a kind of puppet state of China. It's a buffer from US influence. They grapple with each other for influence in Laos, Vietnam and Pakistan too. China has already warned the US over Pakistan.

Makes me want to move to Antarctica.

A unified Korea would have to be nuke free. The American military would also have to go. And Korea would have to accept the current border between China and what is now North Korea, and not make any territorial claims in the future. According to Lankov, were these conditions in place, then China would probably accept unification.

He also made another very interesting claim, which I personally happen to agree with. He said that within the next 5 to 7 years, a prominent South Korean person will openly say that reunification is NOT necessary . That the South doesn't want, need, or stand to gain any benefit from it. At the moment this is far too taboo to say, but I'm pretty sure that this sentiment is in the mind of many, many South Koreans.

Judging by the sheer number of escapees to the ROK, most of North Korea will be living in the south soon anyway.

You probably walk past one or two defectors in the course of an average day in Seoul.

This is hilariously false: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korean_defectors. There are more NETs in Korea than there are North Korean defectors.

Quote:
Approximate total number of defectors from 1953 to 2005: 14,000

That is the moment that reunification will occur, on SK's terms. I've said it for years. The Chinese won't like it and may (probably will) move to stop it, but when SK decides it doesn't need the north, NK will lose its reason to exist and will collapse because it has nothing to bargain with.

There are 3 North Koreans at my school and only one NET.

They all arrived post 2005 though.

Taboo for anyone of real prominence to openly declare, perhaps, but I've heard plenty of Koreans casually express just such sentiments, and frankly, they are right.
