So as I understand it, EPIK, GEPIK, and SMOE are all public school systems in South Korea - just differentiated by location.
My concern is that I really would like to be placed in an urban environment. I am not comfortable with a very rural area. HOWEVER, I just heard that if you go through the public school systems, you are only told where you've been placed AFTER you get to Korea and finish orientation - is this correct?? If this is the case, would you recommend I ONLY apply to SMOE to secure an urban location?
Or it seems like some of the SMOE placements aren't even IN Seoul (seems like the Seoul English Center is possibly in Gapyeong?). And also that some of the EPIK placements can be IN Seoul? BUT I was also told that it can hurt your chances if you apply to more than one of the public school systems (i.e. if you apply to EPIK AND GEPIK or EPIK AND SMOE, then they disqualify you).
Any comments/advice/explanation/details/recommendations are VERY welcome!!! |

My reply won't cover the issue 100%, but it will steer you in the direction I went. Go with a recruiter, talk with the school, and you can choose the exact location. If you apply through the public school system, then they will place you. A recruiter can work privately with a public school and then you can know beforehand where you will be going. Rural means a lot of different things. It could be good or bad. |

I think this is incorrect, if you make duplicate applications to SMOE/EPIK/GEPIK then they will disqualify you. If you apply to SMOE/GEPIK or EPIK/GEPIK then you will be fine. (not sure hoping someone can clarify SMOE and EPIK as I have heard they merged) |

You can apply to all three and be fine. The only thing to be careful about is that you have the option to apply to SMOE through EPIK (and will fill out an additional form to do so). If you do so, then you cannot apply to SMOE directly (you'll be disqualified for duplicate applications).
If you're concerned about location, then GEPIK may be a good way to go. Look into recruiters like Teach ESL Korea or Korvia, who work with GEPIK schools. It's not a centralized process like EPIK/SMOE. So instead, recruiters will shop your materials around to various GEPIK schools, and you'll interview directly with them. You can let the recruiters know your preference of location, and you can accept/deny positions if you don't like the school/location/etc.
I'm not too sure when you're hoping to go to Korea, but if you're hoping for the fall then your chances of a larger city are kind of slim. I believe EPIK and SMOE are no longer accepting applications for the fall (but double check), and although there are still GEPIK positions remaining, majority will probably be in smaller areas. |
