Sorry. Yes, I live here. I'm not that fond of it and find it quite boring, not to mention aesthetically drab.
Which train? The Metro, or the Korail trains? They run pretty frequently depending upon which one you wish to take (Mugunghwa, Saemaeul, Noorio?...pardon the misspellings), and which station you are heading to (Yongsan or Seoul?). I have arrived FROM Seoul on the last train from Yongsan to Pyeongtaek (11:50pm) and noticed on the boards that there were trains leaving for Seoul as late as 1am.
If it's the Metro you are inquiring about, I'm not sure about that one as I have only taken it into Seoul twice and that was because I wanted the time on the train for reading. |

Could be the default answer for about 90% of South Korea's cities.

To see subway time just click on any station and then train time.
Pyeongtaek station is on line 1, and isn't it a stop on the #1 line express subway trains?
Those times are also listed. You can get to and from Seoul much faster using those express trains.
You can get them back to Pyeongtaek at Yongsan station.

Is Pyeongtaek on the express line?
How quick is it if so? 30 or 40 minutes? |

It depends on your final stop. Look at the subway times and check it out. |

Have friends who live there (Korean and foreign).
We only visited.
Personally, were I looking at something "close to Seoul", I would look at other places. Still, getting to Seoul from there is not that far but also not like hopping on the subway.
As for the city itself, it is decent but not that big. Also notewhorthy the US military is merging two large bases from other areas into Korea and moving them to Pyeongtaek. This can have positive and negative results for foreign workers there.
Good luck. |

Train from Pyeongteak to Seoul is about an hour give or take depending on the stop. The other option is to take an express bus, I find to W. Seoul the trains rapid line is best but to SE. Seoul an express bus is faster easier and way more comfortable. From where I am it costs 4k, about the same as an expensive coffee and worth every won. Ktx is no faster than the rapid line and will run you at least what the bus does, I found mostly that if I would have jumped on the first train instead of waiting for the KTX (nooriro or mugunghwa lines) I would have made the same time. Also, at peak times be prepared to book ahead or stand for the whole trip. (+1 for the express bus they run very frequently and you always get a seat).
I've caught buses back from Seoul at about 11 I think, which, if it seems early is later than you'd have to be on the train to make it back before the train stops. I've found cheap ways home from Seoul as late as 1am. If that's still to early I'd just lay over after the bar (or whatever) in a jimjilbang or a PC room or a coffee shop until the trains and buses restart at 5 (all better than an 80k cab ride). |

Ptaek is on the express line and all the major trains like Saemuel, nooriro etc stop there for Seoul. It's extremely convenient for transport as it is a local hub. |

It's true, the express bus from ptaek is excellent...always empty seats and cheap as chips. |

So lets say I depart from Ptaek on the express line.
How long till I get to Hongdae and or Itaeweon? 1.5 hours? |

More or less. I used to live in Pyeongtaek. Fastest way to Itaewon seemed to be regular train to Seoul Station (50 mins) plus a city bus to Itaewon (10 mins), plus waiting time, ticket buying time, walking to bus stop time etc (30 mins).
To Hongdae is a little slower as you have to do some subway transfers.
Or I guess you could always take the train to Seoul Station and change to the AREX airport train. I'm pretty sure they have a Hongik University stop on that line - never did that one though, so I can't really confirm.
You can go to KNTOs website and they have a feature that lets you punch in the departing and arriving stations and how long exactly it's going to take on the various subways. |

With the subway, there are 2 ways I am familiar with.
http://www.nsubway.co.kr/korea/seoul/seoulsubwaymapen.htm
http://www.smrt.co.kr/program/cyberStation/main2.jsp?lang=e
The second one will actually give you a fair estimate. It shows about 2 hours for the slowest one. Maybe 1.5 is closer but plan 2.
Also look at line 1 map http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Seoul_subway-line_1_oper-map.png
If you are lucky, you can get on the red one. I would either get off at Yongsan or the one before, depending on what I was going to do.
I never tried the green one, didn't know it existed at the time.
There is also a bus station near the train station. I preferred using the bus, but I am not sure if there is one you will want. Either it will get you to Incheon or on the east side in the direction of Gangbyeon station (green line) and one of the bus terminal stations on the orange line (I forgot if it is one or both). There might be one to Yeongdeungpo also. I vaguely remember going there to find a Costco I think, but maybe I was going southbound. |
