|
|
I just got an email from the korean recruiter i'm dealing with about a job.
He says the school will pay for my airticket but that his company and me should share the visa run/air ticket expenses .(he says this is normal!!)............ ummmmmmmm no i don't think so!!
Has anybody ever heard of this before???
Last time I came to korea I got my E2 visa in NZ before leaving.
It's the schools responsibility to pay for the visa run costs.
Amazing what people will try and tell you
I guess i should run a mile from this recruiter |

Get your visa at home. If the school is desperate to need you sooner, then they should pay for the visa run.

Hold your ground and insist that they either a) pay for both or b) enable you to get the E2 visa in NZ before you leave.
If they want you there so quickly, then they will be pretty desperate. Also, they'll probably want you to work illegally before you go on your visa run and that could also lead to complications ...
Do you have other offers on the table? |

They want you to come and work illegally and then want you to pay for the visa run.
Alarm bells are ringing already
Just forget about that place if you ask me. You may be in a rush to get here but don't do it at your expense(both financially and mentally).
Remember, it is a year of your life and the rules are not quite the same here. |

50/50, some do some don't. In this case, too many red flags are up. Don't agree and look elsewhere. |

It's a negotiating tactic by the recruiter, who is trying to make things go as cheaply as possible for their client. I recruit and can tell you honestly that it is not common for them to ask this of you. Tell him that you've spoken to another recruiter who disagrees with him.
Don't judge the school by what may be just a recruiter tactic.
Before looking elsewhere, tell the recruiter that you will refuse to sign unless they pay for your visa run.
Tell the recruiter that you would rather wait out the visa process in NZ, than come over a have to pay for a visa run to Japan.
If they are serious about you, they'll spring for it. If not, take a pass. |

It is very odd for the school to ask you to pay for the visa run trip. If they really need you over there then they should pay for the visa run. If not they should be willing to wait until you get your visa process done before you come to Korea. I don't recall any teachers that had to pay for their own ticket for a visa run... |

schools are cutting back it seems as of late. good jobs that you get IN KOREA arent paying the fringe things like housing or airfare anymore. but other benefits more then make up for it. for some jobs i'd over look it. for a dime a dozen hakwon job....absolutely not. chances are they will pay if you have been on the hook for a while and are ready to come and all they have to do is reel you in.....and hopefully not SUCK YOU IN. |

Where is this happening? With exception to some corporate gigs that i've seen, I haven't been seeing this. |

I think it's more like schools are breaking the law more, and they seem to be getting away with it more, too. |

If we stop signing bad contracts, schools will have no choice but to change their ways and treat teachers better. |

My first school payed for everything: Busan-Fukuoka Ferry trip; hotel; and visa. However, I didn't work for 3 days and they didn't pay me for those.
My second school only paid for the ferry trip but I was paid for the days I was away.
My friend works at prestigious public highschool and they pay for zero. It just depends on the school.

Trouble is most of these contracts are bad. And people need jobs. What do we (or they) live on until the schools change their ways? And there are always enough people who are unemployable back home here willing to work with a bad school. This is why I would like to see higher standards. For one, Immigration should check degrees. Anyone with a fake degree gets a one year stay in a Korea jail. No possiblity of time off for good behaviour or parole. This would get most of the above mentioned people out of the country. Same goes for privates. Again a lot of people would leave. This would get the majority of the "trash" out. Sadly enough, for now Korea can't afford to do this. But with more and more people coming here every year, maybe in five years or so Korea will be able to put stricter policies in place . And also greater protection for foreign workers as well. |
